The HND in Music Performance (Jazz) is a practical, hands on and exciting Higher Education course that has been developed to give students a strong foundation in music that will prepare them for a career as a musician. The course content is based on the language and knowledge base of jazz music in its various forms.

Course programme
How will I study?
In year 1 students study 8 different units that contribute to a holistic grounding in all aspects of Jazz music. Year 1 units: Creative arts research; music in context, aural perception, harmony and composition; improvisation in music; keyboard skills; music notation; and music performance studies. In year 2 student study 8 units. They will work towards a major final performance in a public venue. Year 2 units: Preparation; process and production in the creative arts; critical music listening; band rehearsal and performance; harmony and arranging; music composition techniques; music performance skills; planning for public performance; and world music composition and performance.
How will I be taught?
A significant feature of this course is the focus on tutor led band workshops, where students are guided through the process of creating music in a real life, real time situation. The workshops lead to regular performance opportunities, both in college and at local venues. The workshops are supported by a comprehensive set of weekly classes in the fundamental aspects of music making.
How will I be assessed?
A combination of coursework and performances will be used to assess you throughout the course.
