Course programme

What you need to know
How will I study?

Your first year is aimed at getting you familiar with all the equipment that we use in order to capture and produce music. This achieved through practical classroom tasks and demonstrations, enable you to learn and develop your skills through experience. In Music Production Techniques you will learn about how to record bands using state of the art equipment and accessing many classic vintage EQ's and Compressors. You will be taught the skills to edit, mix and produce to semi-professional standard. The other aspect of Logic is it's powerful Sequencing engine, here you will be shown how to completely use Logic's MIDI tools, Synthesisers and Sampler, to manipulate and create your own sounds. Alongside these skills, we believe it is important to have a good foundation of how Music and the Industry works, this is a vital component in an ever competitive market. To ensure this, we cover Music Business, Composing, Theory & Applied Harmony, Keyboard skills and Music and Society.
How will I be taught?

The main emphasis and delivery method is the practical hands-on approach. The reason for this is that we feel you will learn more by doing and by making mistakes! This enables you to think about your approach and how to improve yourself as an engineer/ producer. There are of course class based sessions where there will be written work involved, and where possible it is electronic submission. This is to avoid a lot of paperwork and the potential loss of work.
How will I be assessed?

The BTEC assessment criteria is based on Pass, Merit and Distinction. The majority of the assessing that takes place on the course is through practical work and observations. There is usually some written documentation or research that will need to also accompany the work that you produce.
