How will I be assessed?

All work is continually assessed, with individual units attaining either a Pass or Referral. The final unit (either unit 9 or unit 10) takes the form of an extended project and the only graded unit and can attain a Pass, Merit or Distinction dependent on a mixture of performance and portfolio work.

There are no exams in the main qualification (exams may apply in GCSE/Functional Skills Maths/English)

Assignments range from written critiques, essays and portfolios to live performances and exhibitions with group and individual approaches.

What is the entry process?

Entry is by application form, then interview and audition candidates must perform 1 solo audition piece to an acceptable standard. Candidates must also demonstrate a basic understanding of musical concepts and theory and have a keen interest in Music Technology.

What are the entry requirements?

Minimum qualifications: Level 1

4 GCSE’s at grade E or above or equivalent.

A reference from tutor/school/employer and most recent academic report.
Students will also be required to take functional skills in English and Maths should they not have GCSE at the required grade. The level of functional skills will be decided at initial assessment.
Experience of live public performance and/or working with music technology is not necessary but is desirable.

What else do I need to know?

Timetable and Attendance:
The course is approximately three full days and your attendance is paramount for the effective completion of work, especially in relation to band work. Your attendance and commitment should not fall below the level expected of a fully motivated professional. Internal college candidates applying to the course should have a minimum of 90% attendance on their current course.

Overview:
The course is intended to give you an insight into the world of the working musician/music technologist and requires dedication and commitment. Live solo and band performances constitute a vast amount of assessed work and necessitate high attendance and teamwork skills. In addition the course will teach you how to make a living as a freelance musician, furnishing you with guidance and information on how the music industry, and wider creative industry works. There is a high emphasis on the developmental journey of the professional throughout this course. Peer and SelfAssessment is an important tool in this course and you will be undertaking a vast amount of portfolio building. As such, you will be responsible for building recorded evidence (either audio, visual or written) which shows an ongoing development and improvement of skills and techniques.

The UAL Level 2 Diploma is not an open jam session and will not make you instantly famous, however, the course
will challenge you to stretch your understanding and practical application of various styles as well as assist you in developing into an all rounded professional practical musician. The course has a balanced approach to practical and theoretical work, equivalent to A Level (level 3) standard.

Students of the UAL Level 2 Diploma are required to actively participate in performances at live public vents, often out of the usual college hours and would obviously then be expected to attend college the following morning; therefore we are looking for enthusiastic and devoted musicians who are serious about developing their skills and approach to a professional career in music.

There is also a big emphasis on the supportive roles of live performance such as Live Sound, Stage Lighting and Multimedia Projection. These supportive skills will also be developed and in some cases assessed where appropriate throughout the course.

English and Maths

English and maths qualifications are vitally important for future employers and universities, so the government has made it a priority for students to improve these skills.

Entry Level / Level 1 and Level 2: We’re here to help you on your journey, so if you do not achieve grade A*-C in GCSE English and/or maths, then you will study English and/or maths as part of your college course.

Students who achieve a D grade will be placed on the relevant GCSE programme, while students who achieve an E or below will be assessed to ensure they are placed on the right study programme for their ability.

Level 3 programmes: You will need to meet the course entry requirements specified on the course information above. For the majority of our Level 3 courses, students will need grade A*-C in GCSE English and/or maths. If this is not specified in the course entry requirement, then you may be able to study English and/or maths as part of your college course.

What can I do after this course?

This qualification enables you the opportunity to prepare yourself for a place in the music/wider creative industry or for entry to a UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing and Production Arts or the BTEC L3 Extended Diploma in Music Technology.
