Course programme
The course is intentionally designed to complement the Trinity College of Music Associateship Diploma in ‘Musical Theory’ (AmusTCL)* and students will have the opportunity to sit this exam at the end of the course, should you wish to do so.
During the 15-week course you will study a range of set works drawn widely from across historical periods and musical genres. You will trace the transition from Classicism to Romanticism through works from the eighteenth-century symphonic repertoire — with particular emphasis on Schubert’s Fifth Symphony – study the work of Stravinsky – in particular his Symphony of Psalms – and explore the world of musical theatre, with Bernstein’s – West Side Story as a principal work.
Through the detailed musical analysis of elements of melody, harmony, rhythm, texture and timbre you will examine how music functions both technically and theoretically whilst exploring the social, cultural and political influences surrounding the development and reception of each work. In addition to this, the course will offer you the opportunity to study elements of composition, orchestration and harmony
