Our BA (Hons) Musical Theatre provides a clear understanding of the Performing Arts, enabling you to pursue a lifelong career in the Arts industry. Much of the time you will be developing practical performance skills through structured classes, performance and experimentation. However, you will also be required to develop your analytical skills, which will help improve your understanding of the related roles within the Creative Industries. The training we offer draws on the professional experience of our academic team, with contributions from working performers and directors making this a truly inspiring course.

During the first year, you’ll be introduced to the fundamental principles that form the basis of performance training in a programme of acting, singing, dancing, voice, music theory and contextual studies. Much of the focus in this year is centred upon the core techniques required to perform within the musical theatre industry. Through comprehensive classes and rehearsal projects, you will develop an understanding of the core elements of musical theatre and with it, the ability to become an expressive, flexible and analytical performer. Assessment projects will further develop and test performance skills within the principle discipline of musical theatre (Acting, singing, dancing) as individual practices as well as exploring the synergies of these skills.

The second year will provide further opportunities for you to develop the skills acquired in Year One. Dance classes will begin to involve choreographic responsibilities to further extend your range as a practitioner. Singing classes will continue to explore and develop core skills studied in Level 4/Year 1 whilst also exploring the singing styles of rock and pop to further broaden your range as a performer. You’ll also develop your ability to work on a variety of scripted projects, exploring a range of non-naturalistic genres from Epic, Absurd and Avant-garde which will familiarise you with new modes of acting. This is the year when you’ll also undertake a number of major productions, to be performed in our own theatre as well as in external venues.

During the final year you will be preparing for a lifelong career in the Creative Industries. The focus is on full-scale productions which are performed in major national venues for both public and industry professionals. The culmination of your training will end in a showcase in London for Agents and Casting Directors. By this stage in the programme you will have built up a body of work that demonstrates the risks you’ve taken and the creative and analytical journey you have travelled. To some extent you can choose the direction of this journey based on how you see your future as a professional performer. Musical Theatre is a highly competitive area but by the end of the year, you will have reached the level of professionalism needed to launch your career.

All Modules delivered at the University Centre. 630 contact hours per year (21 hours per week) plus additional 9 hours a week minimum self directed study time.
