About this course
A minimum of four GCSE passes at grade A*-C (or equivalent) for entry to National Certificate. A minimum of five GCSE passes (or equivalent) at A*-C preferably with Maths and English for the National Diploma. A satisfactory interview and reference will also be required.

Course Aims:
These courses are designed to offer a vocational alternative to conventional A levels for courses in higher education in the health and social care sector. The Diploma is equivalent to 3 A levels. The Certificate is equivalent to 2 A levels.
Course Content:
Students study either 12 units for Certificate or 18 units for Diploma.
CORE UNITS include: Developing Effective Communication in Health and Social Care Equality, Diversity and Rights in Health and Social Care Health, Safety and Security in Health and Social Care Fundamentals of anatomy, physiology for Health and Social Care. Development through the lifestyles. Psychological and socialogical perspectives for health and Social Care Personal and Professional Development in Health and Social Care Values and Planning in Social Cares
SPECIALIST UNITS
Examples being: Nutrition for Health and Social Care Infection Control Human Physiology Vocational Experience for Health and Social Care Caring for children and young people
Supporting and protecting adults
(Minimum of 300 hours in work placement).
In addition students will obtain a First Aid at Work Certificate
Progression:
The course prepares students for a range of routes into professional courses, e.g. Nursing Diplomas/Degrees (Adult, Child, Mental Health branches) Social Work degrees, Occupational Therapy/Midwifery degrees/diplomas. Also degrees in health or the applied Social Sciences. Also employment into a range of jobs in health and social care settings. (The qualifications provide much of the underpinning knowledge for the National Occupational Standards as well as developing practical skills in preparation for work and possible achievement of NVQS in due course).

Exam:
Students work is continually assessed throughout the two years of the course. Each module is assessed through college-based assignments moderated by BTEC. Progress in work placements is closely monitored and clear objectives are set, supervised and assessed.

Notes:
This course requires students to pass a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check. The CRB check is compulsory and currently costs 34 per person.Southport College has a policy and Code of Practice on recruitment of ex-offenders. Please refer to the College website where a copy can be found .
