About this course

To have a place on this course you will need either 33 points for the certificate or 35 points for the diploma, you will also need GCSE in English and maths at C or above, however if you do not have this there will be the opportunity to take these in your first year.

Introduction:
This is an exciting opportunity to discover and learn about Fashion and Textiles. You will be taught by highly skilled tutors to enable you to develop your ideas and produce a broad range of work. There will be visits to Fashion/Textiles Museums in London and Manchester to give you an incite to how other designers work. If you would like a career in Fashion or Textiles than this course is for you.

Study Mode & Location:
This is a full time course at the Park School, Moor Park, Preston.

Course Content:
The units you will study are as follows:

You will cover a wide range of skills including, fashion design and promotion, pattern cutting, business and professional practice, photography and computer aided design, contextual studies, printed and constructed textiles, embroidery and drawing and design work.

Assessment:
This will be done through continuous assessment based on projects set throughout the course.

Careers & Progression Opportunities:
Career opportunities include going onto higher education to do a degree in your chosen specialism, working as a freelance designer in fashion or textiles, working as a textile artist on projects in the community, teaching, working in industry promoting fashion, or working as a fashion photographer.

Additional Costs:
You will be required to buy art materials and some fashion and textiles equipment throughout the year. You are also required to go on trips, which are an important part of the course. There are grants available of up to £30.00 a week which you can apply for when you start the course.

Additional Information:
There will be the opportunity to go on trips such as the Zandra Rhodes fashion and textile Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The Whitworth Museum and Platt Hall costume Museum in Manchester. You will also take part in the fashion show held at the Park School every year.

Work Out Your Point Score
You will need to let us know on your application form your predicted exam grades and your point score. To work out your point score, you must use the grades that you get for GCSE Maths and English Language, and then your next best 5 grades. At Preston College, the level of course you start on will depend upon your point score. Your grades are worth the following points:

GCSE Grades
  • A* = 8 points
  • A = 7 points
  • B = 6 points
  • C = 5 points
  • D = 4 points
  • E = 3 points
  • F = 2 points
  • G = 1 point


(GCSE short courses are worth half the score of a full GCSE. Applied GCSEs are equivalent to two single GCSEs, eg an Applied GCSE at Grade C is worth 10 GCSE points).

GNVQ Foundation Part 1 (Equivalent to two GCSEs)
  • Distinction = 8 points
  • Merit = 6 points
  • Pass = 4 points


GNVQ Intermediate Part 1 (Equivalent to two GCSEs)
  • Distinction = 14 points
  • Merit = 12 points
  • Pass = 10 points


Full GNVQ Intermediate (Equivalent to four GCSEs)
  • Distinction = 28 points
  • Merit = 24 points
  • Pass = 20 points


NVQs
NVQ Level 1 = 8 points. (NVQ Level 1 courses are equivalent to two GCSEs at Grade D and guarantee progression to NVQ Level 2 courses in the same subject area).

Certificates of Achievement
Up to 22 points will be awarded to students with Certificates of Achievement, for example AQA units, Compact 2000 and NPRA units. The Schools` Recruitment Team will inform you if you qualify.
