Description of the Course
This course is a practical work related alternative to more theoretical 'A' levels. Employers, Universities and Higher Education Colleges recognise successful completion of this course as equivalent to three 'A2' Level qualifications.
Course content
The first year of the course includes:

· Drawing and painting, including life drawing
· Printmaking
· Textiles
· Fashion
· Ceramics
· History of art & design
· Graphic design,illustration, 3D design
· Multimedia and digital photography
· Fieldtrips
· Group and individual tutorials

In the second year emphasis is placed onchoosing a pathway to specialise in the selection of work for a portfolio andpreparation for applications to University and employment. There is, additionally, a community arts project and a Final Major project in which students produce a detailed piece of research and practical work.

The course is based in the college's purpose built Creative Industries area, which incorporates the newly redesigned art & design area, including printmaking and pottery areas, and multimedia suite.

Assessment
The course is continuously assessed in six week blocks. Some units are externally assessed by a Final major project in the second year. For coursework, students must produce written reports, evaluations and show evidence of planning, research and organisational skills.
Who is the course for?
This course is aimed at those who wish to work in Fine Art, Textiles, FashionGraphic design, 3D and Packaging Design, Publishing, Illustration, Advertising/PR, Fashion, Interior design and Photography.

An average of Grade C for 4 or more GCSE's including English Language, or you will have successfully completed a Level 2 vocational programme at Merit Grade and gained a L2 Key Skills Communication. You may also be asked to demonstrate your commitment and skills in an interview and provide a portfolio of work.If you dont have the required entry qualifications, there will be an opportunity for you to demonstrate your abilities to undertake the course.
What can I do after this course?
Students can progress to a degree or HND in Art and Design or related fields, or an entry level job in the art or design industries.

Studentas under 19 are not required to pay tuition fee, Exam Fee or college registration fee.
Students will need to buy their own art materials all of which are available through the college shop. A list of materials will be provided. Students should expect to spend approximately £200 per year for materials, visits and portfolio.
