NATURE’S LARDER: FOOD FROM THE WILD
18th – 20th July
Are you interested in wilderness foods, natural remedies, and learning more about the many resources our wild plants have to offer? This course introduces you to the identification and properties of a range of medicinal and edible, plants, as well as plants with unusual and varied practical uses.
COURSE OUTLINE
Friday
1600 onwards: arrival. Please ask at reception or in the restaurant for directions to your room.
1800 Supper in restaurant.
1900 Introductions to the Centre, the course, and each other, and a preliminary forage outside.
Saturday
0830 Breakfast in restaurant.
0915 Practical uses for our native wild plants. Making cords, glues, lamps.
1100 Break: a chance to sample various wild teas, or have a more conventional brew.
1130 Practical uses of wild plants, continued.
1300 Lunch in restaurant.
1400 Foraging for wild food and an introduction to some medicinal plants.
1600 Tea break.
1630 Foraging, continued.
1800 Supper in restaurant.
1900 Fire lighting: a hands-on session introducing you to various techniques.
Sunday
0830 Breakfast in restaurant.
0900 Preparation and cooking of wild food.
1100 Tea break.
1130 Preparation and cooking of wild food, continued: edible ornamentals; an introduction by Chloe Ward, CAT's display gardener.
1300 Lunch in the restaurant supplemented by food foraged over the weekend.
1400 Depart.

FOOD AND ACCOMMODATION
The course fee covers full board accommodation at CAT, tuition and course materials. All food is vegetarian, and we are happy to cater for special diets – please let us know your requirements when booking.
There are a small number of single rooms available at an extra cost of £10 per night. Please indicate when you book if you would like a single room.
ACCOMMODATION FOR NON-PARTICIPANTS
Depending on course numbers it is sometimes possible to accommodate friends and family. The cost for a non-participant is £40 per day (full board). Please contact the Course Administrator about availability. We regret that we are unable to offer crèche facilities.
DIRECTIONS
CAT is 3 miles north of Machynlleth on the A487 and is clearly sign posted. To arrive by train you need to come via Shrewsbury to Machynlleth. You can walk to CAT from the station (about 45 minutes) or take a taxi. A single journey costs about £4.50. There are infrequent buses. CAT is registered on as a public group. If you require or can offer a lift, please check the website.
WHAT TO BRING
Please bring sturdy shoes and warm, weatherproof clothes.
We provide bedding but you will need to bring a towel.
A torch is useful for moving between buildings at night.
COURSE FEES
£330 – High Waged / £240 – Waged / £180 - Non waged
As a charity we have to charge a realistic rate for our courses, but we do not want to exclude people because of cost. We have therefore designed a tiered price structure. Please assess yourself as to which rate to pay and let us know when you book. If we do not have this information you will be automatically be invoiced for the high waged rate.

PAYMENT OF BALANCE
Before the course you will receive an information pack and an invoice for the balance. If the balance is not paid two weeks before the course start date, we reserve the right to offer the place to another.
