Course information:
NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Safe Handling of Medicines


Course summary:
The course is suitable for anyone working or wishing to work in a health and social care context. It is also appropriate for care workers working towards the National Care Standards at Induction and Foundation levels.

Course content:
The course aims to provide learners with the opportunity to gain an increased understanding of the use of medication and its possible side effects and to enhance their knowledge of safe administration of medication.
The course will cover the following topics :-
· An introduction to medicines and prescriptions
· Medicine supply, storage and disposal
· The safe administration of medication
· Quality control and record keeping
· Accountability, responsibility and confidentiality

Course structure:
You will have access to a tutor who will support you throughout the programme. Your tutor will agree a schedule of work with you that suit your particular circumstances.
Typically the programme can be completed in 12-20 weeks. You will be entitled to receive a minimum of 8.5 hours of 1:1 support throughout the programme.
You will be able to contact your tutor and/or the college for help, support and guidance at any stage of the course. Your tutor will provide you with detailed feedback on your work.

Assessment procedure:
Candidates will be provided with a series of workbooks for the programme. The workbooks contain the knowledge required to progress towards achieving the qualification with activities to allow candidates to practise their skills and test their learning. Candidates work through the learning materials and complete assessment tasks at the end of each unit. Learning activities and assessments are based on a combination of knowledge and skills learned on the programme and work-based activities and experience.
On successful completion of the 5 units you will be awarded a certificate. The qualification is accredited by a nationally recognised awarding body-NCFE. Candidates work through the distance-learning course materials at their own pace, and at times convenient to them-so there is no need to attend the college to gain the qualification.

Progression opportunities:
On completion you could progress on to a range of programmes including NVQs in Care, Working with Older People, Manual Handling and Infection Control.

Many part-time students at South Tyneside College do not have to pay for their course. We may also be able to help you with some of the extra costs associated with college, eg travel, childcare, equipment, books etc. In addition, depending on the course and the number of hours a week you study, you may be eligible for an Adult Learners†Grant.
