This study programme provides learners with the opportunity to develop the skills achieved by completing the level fitness instructor qualification. The qualification aims to provide learners with the understanding and practical skills needed to work as a Personal Trainer in a variety of settings. This includes understanding health and safety in a fitness environment, customer service, anatomy and physiology, personal training programmes and sessions, and nutrition. Learners successfully completing this qualification will be able to gain access to the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) at level 3.
Students on this course must hold a level 2 fitness instructor qualification. They may not have achieved a grade A-C in GCSE English or Maths, so they will do either a GCSE resit or Functional Skills to help them achieve a grade A-C grade.

Working in the fitness industry requires good interpersonal skills including effective communication and coaching, group management, leadership and motivational speaking, these skills will also be developed through the programme.
Students will also complete a significant work placement of 150 hours in an appropriate gym facility agreed by the college. You will develop a wide range of skills that will benefit you in a career in fitness. These will include: communication, organisation, leadership, teamwork, presenting, researching, customer service and emergency first aid. Applicants must be willing to work flexibly with their placement in order to achieve their work experience hours. A minimum of 4 GCSE's at grade D including English and/or ideally Maths or equivalent (eg Level 1 Functional Skills). Or satisfactory completion of a Level 2 fitness instructors qualification.
All applicants must have a genuine interest in working in the fitness industry, be prepared to participate in physical activities, work in a team, overcome personal challenges and have an enthusiastic approach to learning. This course will enable you to work as a fully qualified Personal Trainer. Students can choose to continue to studies in Sports Massage or a Level 3 Diploma In Sport.
To work with children (under 18) or vulnerable adult’s students you will need to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) application. The college will organise this for you, but you may have to pay. The estimated cost of the check is £44. Full details regarding payment and documents required will be provided prior to enrolment.
There is the opportunity to be involved in the Colleges Sports Academies and there will be a number of residential trips taking place throughout the year. If you are aged 19 or over and considering enrolling on a further education course at Level 3 or above, you may be entitled to an Advanced Learner Loan to help with course fees.
