This course provides an excellent opportunity for personal and professional development for health and social care professionals who wish to develop and extend their knowledge base and professional expertise in the field of neurological rehabilitation. The course builds upon students' current knowledge and experience to facilitate an in-depth exploration of neurological rehabilitation. It is underpinned throughout by evidence based practice and clinical reasoning to ensure the development of a sound, effective and reasoned approach to practice.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

The Postgraduate Certificate in Neurological Rehabilitation programme requires students to complete three modules:

• The Neural Control of Human Behaviour;
• The Principles of Neuro-Rehabilitation;
• Evidence-Based Practice.

The course content is reviewed regularly to remain responsive to current practice developments and developments in neurology and neurological rehabilitation.

Details of the modules are as follows:

The Principles of Neuro-Rehabilitation

The aims of this module are to provide students with the opportunity to critically appraise the contemporary process of neurological rehabilitation, and apply theoretical knowledge to the management of their own practice. An exploration of the philosophy of neuro-rehabilitation, and a comparative evaluation of rehabilitation strategies in this field will assist in the development of an in-depth understanding of the principles of neuro-rehabilitation. Various aspects of the rehabilitative process will be considered, studying these factors within a multidisciplinary environment will ensure relevance of the module content to students’ clinical practice.

The Neural Control of Human Behaviour

Building upon each student’s individual experience, this module aims to facilitate the development of an advanced practitioner in the field of neuro-rehabilitation, through the exploration of the neural control of human behaviour in health and illness. The existing and developing evidence base in the fields of cognitive neuropsychology and motor control will be explored and applied to clinical practice. Critical evaluation of the informing sciences, will allow students to develop an in depth understanding of the implications of neural damage on function, the resulting changes in human behaviour and a greater insight into the patterns of clinical presentation.

Evidence- Based Practice

Evidence based medicine (EBM), evidence based practice (EBP) and evidence based management are all prominent issues on the contemporary health care agenda. This module is designed to examine the theoretical and philosophical basis of EBP and to explore the practical implications involved in achieving EBP in a clinical or health and social care setting. The development of EBP as a concept and more recently as a `movement’ is traced and the inter-relationship of the differing and competing fields of knowledge inherent in EBM are analysed in depth. The overall intention is twofold. Firstly, to build a critical awareness of the complex nature of the concept which warrants attention if EBP is to have an effect on the reality of practice. Secondly, to provide the opportunity for students to develop a thorough understanding of the process of EBP, through consideration of their own area of interest.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

The course will use a variety of teaching and learning strategies including lectures, seminars, workshops, group discussion and debate, and module webs.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

Assessments will include individual written pieces of coursework and oral presentations.

Each module has 30–40 contact teaching hours.
