Course aims
To provide the skills and knowledge required to use health information systems (HIS).

Course information
NHS HEALTH (NHS e-Learning for Health Information Systems) covers all of the key areas users need to be aware of before they begin work on a Health Information System (HIS). After completing a scenario
based pre-Learning assessment, a learning plan is created for the Candidate, taking them through the relevant tutorials within the module to improve their knowledge and skills. A level 1 certifi cate will be awarded to candidates who successfully complete and pass the final assessment.

Course objectives
The key learning outcomes are:
■ Basic concepts - to defi ne the term 'Health Information System' (HIS) and know about the functions, benefi ts and constraints of a HIS
■ Due care - to understand the responsibility for the information you access and use in the workplace. Know about the law as it applies to confi dentiality and the Caldicott principles, and some of the practical measures you can use to keep information secure
■ User skills - to demonstrate some of the common skills that are required for working with Health Information Systems. Understand the importance of working with the correct record and be able to input and save information safely
■ Policy and procedure - to understand the common aspects of policy and procedure relating to Health information Systems. Know the importance of maintaining the audit trail and understand when it is and is not appropriate to amend data or create records.
