Asbestos does it affect you?
If you are a plumber, joiner, window fitter, roofer, IT, mechanic, or work within the trades and even the DIY enthusiast may be affected by asbestos exposure. How? Properties built before 2000 may or quite probably contain asbestos. Asbestos insulation board (AIB) used for insulation, asbestos cement, used for roofing, asbestos tape, soffits, lots of asbestos containing products are within our homes and our workplaces
Knowing how to identify products that may contain asbestos and having the skills to work on them safely without causing exposure to asbestos fibres is the simplest way to combat a deadly product that HSE estimates kills 20 tradesmen a week.
Need Training? It often appears complicated, licensed, non-licensed removal or works, asbestos awareness, HSG247, L143 ACoP, HSG210, Cat 1-2 -3? For the trades not familiar with the terminology or the regulations that surround asbestos removal, works and awareness it can appear to be a minefield of complicated terminology and sales pitches.
Truth is, it is not rocket science, if you are a licensed asbestos removal contractor you will be fully aware of the training requirements for your staff.
If it is your company policy to work on “asbestos containing materials” (ACM’s) for example you are required to drill holes in walls / boards during the course of your daily work and it may contain asbestos, you require non-licensed asbestos works training and a copy of HSE’s task manual HSG210, alternatively you may be required to remove asbestos containing material, asbestos cement roofs, then you will require non-licensed asbestos removal training and a copy of HSG189/2, These courses will deliver ½ day theory with a ½ day practical “hands on training” giving the workforce the knowledge and the skills to do their job efficiently and safely and comply to legislation, H&S regulations.
If it is your company policy to not work on ACM’s, however you require the ability to identify materials / products that may contain asbestos before commencing works, you will require asbestos awareness training. This training will generally be a ½ day theory covering all the aspects of asbestos.
If you own property that people occupy either for work or as tenants the you have a duty to manage and maintain the asbestos within the building and hold a building register that identifies asbestos within the building and records the management and maintenance of the asbestos.
The DIY enthusiast is also at risk of unknowingly disturbing asbestos.
Information is easy to source from HSE website, their 2009 campaign is designed for the trades to raise awareness of the dangers of asbestos exposure.
