The purpose of this module is to prepare nurses without a Specialist Practitioner Qualification (SPQ) to prescribe safely, appropriately and competently from the Nurse Prescribers Formulary for Community Practitioners.

Community Practitioner Nurse Prescribing provides an exciting and challenging opportunity for nurses without a SPQ a to expand their roles to meet their patient and service needs and to improve patient access to appropriate medication, wound dressings and appliances.

The module is recognised as a discrete programme in its own right which, on successful completion, leads to a professional qualification recordable with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC); the V150.

About this course

Enable the practitioner to enhance their consultation skills and to work in a team context;
Examine from a critical perspective issues of professional accountability and responsibility as they relate to community practitioner nurse prescribing and to work within this legislative framework;
Enable the practitioner to appraise the relevant sources of information, advice and support available when making prescribing decisions in practice; and understand influences that may affect these decisions;
Demonstrate an understanding and application of knowledge to the actions of drugs;

The module is designed to meet the needs of nurses and their employers. Before commencing the module nurses must be registered with the NMC, have practiced for a minimum of 2 years and be deemed competent by their employer in the area they intend to practice to undertake the module and provide evidence of an ability to study at degree level (level 6).

Course programme

This module can be studied on a standalone basis and it is a core module on the BSc (Hons) Public and Community Health programme.

It is an optional module for the following programmes:

  • BSc (Hons) Clinical and Professional Practice
  • BSc (Hons) Clinical and Professional Mental Health Practice
  • BSc (Hons) Clinical and Professional Child and Young Person’s Palliative and End of Life Care Practice



Clinical pharmacology, including the effects of co-morbidity; consultation, history taking, diagnosis, decision making and therapy, including referral; influences on, and psychology of, prescribing; prescribing in a team context and sharing information; evidence based practice and clinical governance in relation to nurse/midwife prescribing; legal, policy and ethical aspects of prescribing; professional accountability and responsibility; prescribing in the public health context.

How will I be assessed?

To pass the module, obtain 20 credits at level 6 and a prescribing qualification recordable with the NMC, all students must pass the written examination, case study and the practice competencies and submit a reflective portfolio of evidence.

Assessment includes:

  • A one and a half hour unseen multiple choice, short answer and numeracy written examination;
  • A 2,000 word prescribing case study;
  • Practice Assessment: Development and achievement of identified skills to a required level; assessed by way of continuous and collaborative approach involving the practitioner and their mentor;
  • A reflective portfolio; This will be submitted as evidence of the development of prescribing practice, achievement of learning outcomes and completion of 75 hours of learning.
On successful completion you will:

be able to record the qualification with the NMC and the award of 20 credits at degree level (level 6).
