Nursing, Midwifery & Health-Related Qualifications - Access to HE Diploma

Course ID:
PC02348

Academy:
Health, Social Care & Early Years

Introduction:
This course is aimed at people who wish to gain entry to Higher Education (HE) to study Nursing, Midwifery or other health-related fields. The course will also enhance an employment profile. As such, this is an academic route into HE with a practical work experience element arranged by the learner. It is particularly aimed at Adult learners who would like to progress to University but who do not have the relevant qualifications to enter usually because they have had a break in education or have chosen a new career path.

Study Mode & Location:
This one year Part-Time+ course will be held at Preston College, Fulwood Campus, St. Vincent's Road, Preston, PR2 8UR.

Recommendations
: Evidence of recent successful study at intermediate level, e.g., a BTEC First Diploma; recent GCSEs or evidence of other courses undertaken with a written assessment. Learners should possess a good level of competence in written English, e.g., GSCE English, Key Skills L2 Communications or equivalent and numerical skills, e.g., GCSE Mathematics, Key Skills L2 Application of Number or equivalent, although, in terms of the latter, arrangements can be made to study whilst on the Access course. If you haven't been in education for a while but have some Level 2 qualifications, there is an opportunity to meet with a Tutor for advice and/or an informal interview and possibly undertake a short assessment to â€-fast track' you onto the Access course.

Course Content:
The units you will study are as follows:

· OCNW Level 2 Unit (mandatory): Study Techniques

· OCNW Level 2 Unit: Introduction to Human Physiology

· OCNW Level 2 Unit: Introduction to Reflective Practice Skills

· OCNW Level 3 Subject (mandatory): HE Toolkit

· OCNW Level 3 Subject: Human Physiology

· OCNW Level 3 Subject: Social Issues in Health Care

We try, where possible, to engage in out-of-College activities and also aim to bring guest speakers into College. We will also assist you in gaining practical experience in a care setting and to make the best use of these opportunities to enhance your profile and HE application. It is CRUCIAL that you understand the volume of work required and the level of commitment to achieve the qualification and, as such, you need to allow for considerable time spent on private study if you are to be successful on the course.

Assessment:
The Access to HE Diploma is credit based and learners will follow a planned programme of study. Successful completion will require you to achieve 60 credits, including at least 45 credits at Level 3 with the remainder at Level 2 or above.

Assessment at Level 2 follows a three step process which includes:

· A short assignment (500 words)

· An extended assignment (1000 words)

· Compilation of a portfolio of class notes and extended research

N.B. The Level 2 Study Techniques Unit consists of an extended assignment (1000 words or equivalent), only.

Each Level 3 Subject consists of 4 Unit assessments as follows:

· One 1000 word essay

· One 2000 word essay

· One 2000 word research project

· One 2 hour examination

Subject Tutors will give assistance in scheduled timetabled slots in all areas of assessment; Curriculum Studies is also built into the course timetable to provide help on a weekly basis; and, time is put aside in each Level 3 Subject for revision. Each learner will also have access to a Personal Learning Adviser in weekly Tutorial slots.

Careers & Progression Opportunities:
There is an exceptionally high rate of successful progression from this Access course. Students have progressed to the Diploma in Nursing and degrees in Nursing and Midwifery and other degrees such as Physiotherapy, Radiography, Occupational Therapy, Complementary and Alternative Medicine or Health Studies. Some learners have studied for the Diploma in Operating Department Practice. A further consideration may be the Foundation Degree in Integrated Education and Care of Children and Young People which can be studied at Preston College. Other learners have enhanced their profile and gained additional confidence. This course may also improve employment prospects in the field of voluntary and private care agencies as well as within Social Services and health care. Many learners have been offered work as a direct result of undertaking the Level 2 Reflective Practice Skills.

Additional Costs
: Several Lever Arch Files. It is recommended that you buy a minimum of one book from the reading list in different Subjects (approx. £25.00 each).
