The course is delivered over an extended academic year (45 weeks), with 50 per cent based in clinical practice in a variety of hospital and community settings. You'll need to travel to placements and work shifts to gain the full range of learning experiences.
Adult nursing is concerned with the care of people over 18. Your work could range from providing care during a time of sudden or severe illness, to helping someone manage an illness they have to live with for the rest of their life. It could also involve promoting good health within the community as well as hospitals.
From day one, you'll focus on studying your chosen field of nursing. We'll introduce you to the field of nursing and you'll start to develop the essential care skills you need. You'll integrate theory with practice by completing a variety of clinical placements. As you progress through the course, you'll gain more skills and knowledge. And when you graduate, you'll be eligible to register as an adult nurse.
Employment opportunities for nurses are varied and exciting. Our graduates find employment with a range of local and national employers - in both the NHS and independent sectors. Some find opportunities abroad.
An interview, Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and occupational health screening form part of our selection process. You must also sign the Health and Social Care awards Contract of Professional Behaviour at the start of the programme.

Our Pre Registration Nursing awards seek to engage and motivate students by using a wide variety of interactive learning opportunities and experiences within both academic and placement settings, maintaining a student, service user and practice centred approach to learning. The awards have been designed to firstly build and then utilise your knowledge, skills and experience and enable you to share this with other students.
Learning, teaching and assessment is underpinned by the need to ensure fitness for practice. All of our teaching, learning and assessment strategies are planned to ensure that NMC standards for education and practice are met.
Nursing requires the integrated study of subject specific knowledge, skills and values, together with the critical application of professional, ethical, legal and research knowledge and evidence, in order to underpin professional practice. The learning strategies within this award therefore include:

Theoretical learning: (50%) 2, 300hrs
This involves classroom based teaching and learning (student and lecturer led) including interactive lectures, skills teaching, problem based learning, electronic learning, module and personal tutorials. It focuses on the development of key theoretical, professional and personal knowledge, specifically designed to provide you with a platform on which to develop further learning and enquiry.

Skills teaching: Nursing is a practice based discipline and the acquisition of clinical skills is essential for the development of student competence. Clinical skill development forms a major part of our curriculum providing you with continuing opportunities to acquire , consolidate and apply your skills as the course progresses

Small group work enables students to develop appropriate critical skills by engaging in facilitated group work/ discussion, case analysis and problem focused learning. It also allows you to share your learning with students from all fields of nursing and other healthcare professions.
Blackboard virtual learning environment (VLE): all of our modules have support materials to enhance independent learning activity. You will be encouraged to use the VLE as a way of communicating with each other and award teachers for example, discussing or sharing any useful resources or ideas related to assignment work. Independent learning forms a central learning approach and includes all the independent research, study and learning that students do to support achievement of outcomes and personal and professional progression.
Inter-professional Learning:
Effective team working is central to adult nursing. Throughout the course you will have the opportunity to learn and work alongside a wide variety of health care professionals including paramedic, operating department, midwifery and medical students

Service user and care involvement: Service user and carer involvement in pre-registration programmes is an established and growing aspect of teaching and learning across all of our fields of nursing
Practice Learning (50%) 2, 300 hrs
Practice observation, and participation under direct and indirect supervision, mentorship and assessment. Clinical assessment enables mentors to focus on the application of theory to practice, through questioning, reflection and discussion regarding the evidence underpinning practice.

Placements: The learning experience in placements aims to promote practice learning across a wide range of adult care settings. All students are supernumerary to the staffing requirements of the placement area; this allows them to follow appropriate learning opportunities.
