Course programme

To become registered with the Joint Industry Board (JIB) on the Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) as an Electrician it is essential that you hold both a Technical Certificate such as C&G 2360 Pt1 & Pt2 or C&G 2330 Level 3 and C&G 2356 NVQ Level 3 Electrotechnical Services.

NVQ's are practical, work based qualifications. However they also contain an underpinning knowledge element which must also be achieved. The C&G 2356 NVQ Level 3 Electrotechnical Services has been designed so that this underpinning knowledge is met by the current C&G 2330 Level 3 or equivalent (eg, the C&G 2360 Pt1 & Pt2). It is therefore recommended that the two qualifications be undertaken together.

The Isle of Wight College is able to offer the C&G 2356 NVQ Level 3 Electrotechnical Services under the following programmes.

Modern Apprenticeships

This programme is available for young people aged 16 - 25 and can be accessed through the IW College.

The programme comprises the following elements:

C&G 2330 Technical Certificate Level 2 and Level 3 (three years part time).

C&G 2356 NVQ Level 3.

Practical Performance Assessment (sometimes known as AM2) which is part of the NVQ assessment.

Keyskills.

For candidates aged 16-18 all elements of the programme are funded by the Learning and Skills Council.

For candidates aged 19+ there is a charge for the Practical Performance Assessment element.

Adult Apprenticeships

This programme is available for all people aged 25+ and can be accessed through the IW College.

The programme comprises the following elements:

C&G 2330 Technical Certificate Level 2 and Level 3 (three years part time).

C&G 2356 NVQ Level 3.

Practical Performance Assessment (sometimes known as AM2) which is part of the NVQ assessment.

Keyskills.

There is a charge for the Practical Performance Assessment element.

New Entrants

This programme is for people who are generally (but not exclusively) over 25 and who are entering the electrical contracting industry.

It requires that:

You are employed full time as a trainee electrician.

Your employer is willing to participate in the programme.

Your employer is able to cover the full range and depth of work required by the NVQ.

You are enrolled on the C&G 2330 and working towards Level 3.

There is a cost to the programme which includes:

C&G 2330 Technical Certificate Level 3 (three years part time).

C&G 2356 NVQ Level 3.

Practical Performance Assessment (sometimes known as AM2) which is part of the NVQ assessment.

The NVQ cannot be awarded until the Technical Certificate and Practical Performance Assessment is achieved so the maximum length of time to achieve the NVQ will be three years.

All applicants will be required to undergo initial assessment which will include interviews with both candidate and employer to assess suitability

Details of cost can be obtained from IW College and applicants are advised that funding bodies (not linked to IW College) are often able to provide some funding for this programme.

Practising Operatives

This programme is for people over 25 and who have been working in the electrical contracting industry for over 2 years and who have gained experience as a competent electrician, working without supervision, across the full range and depth required for the NVQ. This means that you must have worked in all environments eg (Domestic, Commercial, Industrial), worked with all cabling systems eg (PVC twin, PVC Single, SWA), worked with all enclosures eg (conduit, trunking, tray, basket), carried a full range of faultfinding, diagnosis, inspecting, testing, had responsibility for liaising with customers/clients and giving them technical advice and had responsibility for health and safety related issues.

This programme is not available to any person who is considered to be a trainee or improver.

It requires that:

You hold an appropriate technical certificate such as C&G 2330 Level 3 or C&G 2360 Pt1 & Pt2.

You are currently employed (or self employed) as an electrician.

You can show evidence that you have been employed (or self employed) as an electrician in the electrical contracting industry for over two years.

That you have covered the full range and depth of work required by the NVQ in your previous and/or current employment.

There is a cost to the programme which includes:

C&G 2356 NVQ Level 3.

N.B. Practising Operatives are exempt the Practical Performance Assessment (sometimes known as AM2) and will already hold C&G 2360 Pt1 & Pt2 so there is no cost for these.

It should be possible to complete this qualification in three months.

All applicants will be required to undergo initial assessment which will included interviews with both candidate and employer (who will both need to produce documentary evidence) to assess suitability.

Details of cost can be obtained from IW College and applicants are advised that funding bodies (not linked to IW College) are often able to provide some funding for this programme.
