New Standards in Care

NVQ's are recognised qualifications in care. The NVQ Level 3 is the award for staff who lead, direct and participate in physical care to clients. Candidates must be well motivated to learn independently. You will be given a study pack of learning activities which you will be expected to complete to show your knowledge and understanding of care practice. Your work practice will be observed by one of our trained Assessors.

WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?
This course is suitable for those people who are working in the care setting in a more senior position and want to gain an NVQ. This course will suit anyone who is taking responsibility at work as a senior carer or similar position. The staff will help you with the underpinning knowledge, show you ways to collect evidence and help build your portfolio. You will receive maximum support and guidance and can learn in your own time, at your own pace and in your own environment.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

In order to achieve your NVQ, you will need to complete a total of eight units; four of these are mandatory and four you can choose, depending on the kind of tasks you do in the workplace. All units are assessed by observation of your work in the care setting and evidence of your knowledge and understanding of care practice. Therefore, you must be working in a care setting in order to complete the NVQ. This maybe in a residential or nursing home or in the community.

HOW WILL I LEARN?
You will be expected to work through the learning materials at your own pace. It is important to set yourself targets to make sure you progress steadily through the award. We recognise that you have a lot of experience and you will have the chance to reflect on your own practice and fully understand the theory which supports it. Your Assessor will support you by checking your progress with the learning materials and assessing your practice in the workplace by direct observation.

Your Assessor will assess your portfolio of evidence to make sure you have covered all the units to a satisfactory standard.

Attendance at the college is compulsory for two three hour Inductions and at least six of the workshops where you will take part in class based activities with

other candidates, for example, discussions and group activities. We also have regular sessions where we help with putting your work together in a portfolio ready for the assessor.

ASSESSMENT

You will be observed in the workplace on a minimum of three occasions so that you can show your competence at work. You will have a portfolio of evidence which includes records of your observations, activities and supporting material.

COMPLETION DATE

You will be entitled to assessment of your practical skills in the work setting for one year, therefore, if you start the course in August 2008, we would expect you to have completed by July 2009. Many candidates complete before this deadline.
