The aim of the Interpreter Training Programme is provide participants with the basic knowledge and theory necessary to begin the process of building their NVQ portfolio to then become a fully qualified interpreter. Course Dates are: 5 Group sessions (10 days) Thursday & Fridays 05/05/11 & 06/05/11 09/06/11 & 10/06/11 07/07/11 & 08/07/11 28/07/11 & 29/07/11 11/08/11 & 12/08/11. Suitable for: Candidates who have achieved their BSL NVQ4/6 qualification but require additional training in ethics etc before completing a portfolio course at this level. This programme is open to both Deaf & Hearing candidates.

Byron is a qualified interpreter working for Sign Solutions as Head Interpreter. He is an experienced tutor who will be the lead tutor on our Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Sign Language Interpreting courses commencing in 2011.
Course programme
Course review:
Unlike some other Centres, Sign Solutions offer a taught programme which provides training in specific areas of interpreting theory and practice, including practical preparation, professional development, self evaluation, professional practice and ethics. The programme comprises of 80 hours of tutor contact time.
It is part of Sign Solutions’ ethos that trainee interpreters should be taught by interpreter practitioners who have years of experience in the interpreting field in addition to academic knowledge.

- Ethics, attitudes & interpreter power
- Preparation for assignments
- Models and processes of interpreting, dynamics and interaction
- Pragmatics
- Cohesion & coherence in BSL and English
- Cultural differences and strategies to mediate between cultures
- Creating a ‘visual picture’
- Discourse analysis workshop as well as other self-evaluation techniques
- Co-working
- Assertiveness and coping strategies
