Course programme

This award is designed for staff who deliver physical, emotional or enabling care to clients who have a medium to high degree of dependency, whether they work in health or social care, or in the public, private or voluntary sectors.

It is designed to be applicable wherever such care is delivered. The award has links to the NVQ Level 2 Health and Social Care award, but reflects a higher level of responsibility and specialisation.

It is important to note that the qualification is applicable wherever care is delivered including hospitals, the client's own home, clinic, residential homes, nursing homes, day centres and group homes.

There are two pathways depending on the work role and the age group of the service users. The two pathways are Adults and Children & Young People.

This NVQ also includes additional specialist Units that are relevant to individuals working in:

  • Physiotherapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Speech and language therapy

What is this qualification based on?

This qualification is based on the National Occupational Standards (NOS) developed by the joint project shared between the sector skills councils Skills for Care and Skills for Health. They include the social care units and the health units relevant to both the social care and health sectors.

This is a work-oriented qualification and is aimed at those who have current real work experience. It is open to candidates of any age, of either gender and there are no entry barriers on grounds of race, creed or previous academic attainment or learning.

Attendance Option(s)

We deliver the underpinning knowledge either at the workplace or in the class rooms depending on each learners circumstances.

Qualification Structure

A total of 8 units need to be achieved (4 core, 4 optional). Within the structure of the NVQ, there are units which are specific to the two pathways. There are also generic units which are available to candidates on both pathways.

The mandatory units are:

  • o Promote effective communication for and about individuals
  • Promote, monitor and maintain health, safety and security in the working environment
  • Reflect on and develop your practice.
  • Promote choice, well being and protection of all individuals

Candidates must select 4 further units from a choice of 105 optional units drawn from Adult, Children and Young People or generic NVQ routes. Please note that your job role will influence your choice of optional units.

Entry Requirement(s)

There are no formal qualifications required to do the qualification. However, a good standard of oral and written skill are required together with working within the job role. To apply for this programme, you will need to complete an application form and an initial assessment of the basic skills.

You will also be required to complete the skills analysis sheet in order for us to be sure that you can produce evidence for assessment, essential for this qualification. Informal interview with a member of the NVQ team is mandatory.

Delivery and Assessment

The NVQ in Health & Social Care Level 3 is delivered wholly in the workplace with the option of bleanded learning for the underpinning knowledge delivered. You will be allocated a personal assessor and supplied with all the necessary reading and assessment materials. Candidate work through the support materials and complete activities and assessments for each unit. The tutor/assessor will support candidates with these and also oversee learners carrying out practical tasks in the workplace. Your tutor/assessor will provide personal tutorial support at pre-arranged times or through phone call or email.

Once the level 3 Health & Social Care portfolio is completed it is checked by an internal verifier, and externally verified by the awarding you are registered with. If the evidence is satisfactory the candidate is then awarded the qualifiaction. Successful completion of this course will lead to NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care (Adult).
