Hospital Porters

Skills and Interests

As a hospital porter, you will need:

  • good communication skills for dealing with other hospital staff, patients, and the general public in a friendly and helpful manner
  • to be physically fit and active
  • the ability to cope well under pressure
  • the ability to act calmly and quickly in emergencies
  • to be able to follow instructions
  • to be reliable and hardworking
  • to be able to cope well with sickness, death and distress.

Entry

You do not need any formal qualifications, but you must have a good standard of literacy and numeracy. Interviews may include a medical examination and physical fitness test. A driving licence may be necessary for work in larger hospitals, with a number of buildings.

There is no set minimum entry age, but most applicants are over 18.

Qualifications and employment experience in health care or other fields involving working with the public are very useful. To gain insight into this role some people volunteer to work in a hospital helping the porter with his/her duties.

Training

Training is given on the job and initially involves a short induction course covering general information about the hospital, health and safety issues, safe lifting techniques and how to transport equipment.
This qualification is aimed at staff in critical support services roles including:

  • • porters
  • • security staff
  • • housekeepers
  • • laundry workers
  • • caterers
  • • cleaners
  • • health records
  • • transportation.

Learners working in any of these roles play a critical part in ensuring that patients, users, and carers experience a quality service. This qualification is appropriate for full or part-time workers employed within the NHS or by independent health care providers.

What qualifications are available?

There is a single NVQ at Level 2 which is made up of four core units and four optional units from a group of thirty.

The four core units are:

  • Foster people’s equality, diversity and rights
  • Contribute to the effectiveness of teams
  • Promote, monitor and maintain health, safety and security in the workplace
  • give customers a positive impression of yourself and your organisation

The remaining four units are selected from a further list of optional thirty units which cover all the job roles above. The NVQ in Support Services in Health Care is based on the national ccupational standards, developed by Skills for Health. The award has some units in common with NVQs in a wide range of sectors from care to customer service and cleaning. Learners who achieve these units within the NVQ in Support Services in Health Care gain credit towards other NVQs in which the units appear and vice versa. This means that they can more easily progress or develop their career.

The learner’s skills and knowledge are assessed in the actual workplace and they must be working in a real health care setting on a full or part time basis either on a paid or voluntary basis.
