An Introduction to Animal Care within the range of small animals - fish, hamsters, guinea pigs, giant african snails, rabbits, goats, chickens, ducks and small ponies. Students completing this course will be aiming for employment as assistants in Pet Shops or Farm Parks and other tourist attractions or to progress onto NVQ Level 2 with the eventual aim of Veterinary Nursing or Degree level cours. Suitable for: Anyone with a genuine interest in small animals and enthusiuasm to learn. The course is mostly practiucal but some written work is expected. There are NO formal exams. The course is delivered and examined by continuous assessment.

Course programme

NVQ Level 1 in Animal Care

Five Core Units for continuous assessment build up a Portfolio of work during the year. The course usually runs from September to June each year.

  • AC1 Assist with handling and moving animals
  • AC2 Prepare Feed for animalsCU30 assist with cleaning and maintaining accommodation
  • CU1 Maintain safety or self and others and effective working relatioships with others
  • CU29 Assist with the Health and Well-being of animals
  • CU30 assist with cleaning and maintaining animal accommodation

Students on this course also visit other centres in the area such as Seal Rescue, Greyhound Rescue, Parrot Zoo, Animal Parks and Aquatic Centres.

Payment options:

NVQ 1 requires attendance in this centre for one day per week. Home study may take another 3 houirs per week.
