NVQ Level 2 Floor Covering

Carpet fitters and floor layers lay floor coverings in homes, and commercial premises like shops, bars, restaurants and offices. They work with a variety of materials including carpeting, floor tiles, cork and wood.

Their job is extremely varied, working at different locations and with a lot of different customers. Each job depends on the size and shape of the rooms and the type of floor covering required, but most involve:
· measuring up floor space and estimating how much material they will need
· drawing up a plan that makes the most efficient use of materials
· clearing the work area of furniture and sometimes removing doors
· removing old carpet or flooring
· preparing the floor surface by cleaning, levelling and sealing with compound if required
· cutting and fitting underlay if used
· fixing flooring materials by one of several methods, such as stretching over spiked grippers, stitching, taping, heat-sealing or gluing
· spraying the floor covering with a protective coating,
· putting furniture back into place and re-hanging the doors where necessary.

You will have to demonstrate competent performance in the workplace although you may attend college to "top-up" or practice elements of your trade.

Assessment is mainly by practical demonstration of skills in the workplace. You will need to keep a portfolio of evidence as you work towards your qualification.
