Course objectives The course involves you completing a level 1 National Governing Bodies sports coaching award to develop a multi-skilled approach to your coaching. You will then study on a level 2 sports coaching award in a specialist sport.
Is it for me? The course is designed for those who are interested in a career in sports coaching and/or activity leadership. The course has been developed in line with the Tyne & Wear Sports Workforce Development Plan to develop level 2 sports coaches in the region. Previous students who have completed the course have gone on to football scholarships at USA universities, coaching at summer camps in America and France, coaching with Newcastle United's Football In The Community team and as part-time sports coaches in the community.
What will I study? The course involves you completing a level 1 National Governing Bodies sports coaching award to develop a multi-skilled approach to your coaching. You will then study on a level 2 sports coaching award in a specialist sport. This is supported by generic national leader and coaching qualifications. All students attending will complete a two day per week work placement throughout the year.

Based in cutting edge facilities you'll be in the environment for success - our lecturers and coaches are the top of their game and our facilities are among the best in England with modern, well equipped classrooms, sports science and medicine facilities, a performance lab, an aerobics studio and a superb 83m long athletics hall.
How will I be taught? You will be taught using a variety of teaching methods including practical demonstrations and classroom based activity.
You will study at our multi-million pound Academy for Sport at Gateshead International Stadium.
What qualification will I get? Successful candidates will gain:
Level 1 Sports coaching awards
Sport specific Level 2 Coaching award
NVQ Level 2 in Activity Leadership
1st4 sport Level 2 award in coaching studies
UK Sports Coach higher sports leader award (Level 3)
Can I go onto further study? Yes you could progression in to Level 3 BTEC National Diplomas, Foundation Degree (dependent on other current qualifications) or Level 3 sports specific coaching qualifications.
What are the career opportunities? You could look for employment as a sports coach full or part-time, a career in sports development or self employment as an activity leader or sports coach.

Financial Support If you are aged 16-18 and study on a full-time, further education programme then your course is free. If you are over 18, and your course is not free, then grants and loans may be available to help towards course fees. .
