STUDENT PROFILE

This programme is designed for people who wish to gain an understanding of principles and practice of Substance Misuse Awareness. It is particularly useful for people working on a voluntary or professional basis in counselling roles. No prior knowledge is required.

COURSE OUTLINE

The course consists of the modules listed below:

1: Understanding drug use

* History of drug use
* the effects of drug
* drug facts
* understanding attitudes and values about drugs

2: Recognising and responding to drug use

* Know the signs and symptoms relating to drug use
* the laws in relation to drug use
* problems associated with drug use
* harm reduction
* responses to drug use
* drug services

3: Communicating with young people about drugs

* Using effective communication skills when talking to young people about drugs

4: Understanding solvent and volatile substance abuse (VSA)

* Reasons why VSA should be a cause for concern

5: Awareness of issues concerning alcohol and young people

* Issues surrounding the use/misuse of alcohol
* the different types of alcohol consumption and their potential effects
* the consequences associated with different types and levels of alcohol consumption
* attitudes towards and the impact of alcohol use on young people

6: Blood borne viral infections related to drug use

* the nature, extent and effects of blood borne viruses
* understand how to prevent the transmission of blood-borne viruses
* understand the range of attitudes and values about blood-borne viral infections

DURATION

Students may study over any timescale of up to one year. To complete the course will take in the region of 60 hours of study.

The course is accredited at level 3 by OCNW, a leading awarding body recognised by the UK Qualifications and Curriculum Authority.
