About this course

The Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) regulations require a candidate:- 1) To be not less than 19 years of age. 2) To have at least 36 months of qualifying sea service in an acceptable deck capacity with testimonials which show that at least 6 months have been spent on bridge duties in the last 12 months of sea service. Testimonials should also cover the character, behaviour, conduct and ability of a candidate aboard ship. 3) Discharge book entries verifying sea service. A candidate who does not have a discharge book will need too obtain documentation from their shipping company verifying their sea service. It is the responsibilty of candidates to ensure that all entry requirements for the course and the issue of a Notice of Eligibility (NoE) by the MCA are met prior to attending the course.

Course content:
The course is designed for non VQ candidates and is based upon the Edexcel HND programme in Nautical Science. Modules 1 and 2 must be completed in sequence which are preferably end on.

The subjects studied are:

Module 1: Celestial Navigation, Ship Construction, Meteorology, Bridge Watchkeeping, Marine Law and Management, Signals.

Module 2: Chartwork, Tides and Sailings, Ship Stability, Cargo Work Emergency Response and Communications.

Assessment
For Module 1 the assessment is college based, with the Signals examination carried out by MCA examiners.

For Module 2 the assessment is college based, but will also include the MCA/SQA examinations at the end of the Module 2.

The course is offered in two modules, each of twelve weeks duration. Modules 1 & 2 must be completed in sequence, which is preferably end on.

Progression opportunities:
After achieving an Officer of the Watch (Unlimited) Certificate of Competence, you may continue to Master certification by way of Chief Mate when appropriate sea time and examination requirements have been complied with.

Further information:
In addition to completing Modules 1 & 2 satisfactorily, candidates must be in possession of the following short course certificates before the Certificate of Competence is issued by the MCA.
1) STCW Personal Survival Techniques
2) STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (PSC & RB)
3) (UK) Efficient Deck Hand (EDH)*
4) GMDSS General Operator's Certificate
5) STCW Medical First Aid Aboard Ship**
6) STCW Advanced Fire Fighting***
7) (UK) Navigation, Radar and ARPA Simulation (Operational)

*A Steering Certificate
**This Certificate is valid for five years
***To be eligible for this course, candidates must have completed and approved Basic Fire Fighting course.

It is strongly advised that you complete as many of these short courses as possible prior to the start of Module 1.
