About this course

To complete certification 36 months qualifying service in an acceptable deck capacity must be completed. Testimonials will be required to show that at least 6 months have spent on bridge duties in the last 12 months of sea service. Entry to this course will be accepted with a minimum of 24 months Sea time.

Course summary:
The study programme is as follows:
VQ Level 3 Units:
  • Communicate using equipment and visual means
  • Respond to emergencies on board ship
  • Take charge of survival crafts and rescue boats
  • Maintain a legal and safe working environment on board ship
  • Create, maintain and enhance productive working relationships on board ship
  • Control mooring, anchoring and security of the vessel
  • Maintain navigational watch in unlimited areas
  • Intitate response to navigation emergencies in all vessels
  • Monitor and control vessel operations


Course content:
There are 9 Vocational Qualification (VQ) Units to be completed for the level 3 award. These units cover all the knowledge required for this qualification. The complete list of units is shown here.
In addition, in order to obtain certificate of competency, a range of short courses must be completed and an oral examination conducted by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) examiner.

Assessment procedure:
Additional course requirements are:
  • STCW Personal Survival Training
  • STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boat
  • Efficient Deck Hand
  • Navigation Radar and ARPA simulation (operational Level)
  • Medical First Aid onboard ship
  • Basic & Advanced Fire fighting
  • GMDSS (General Operators Certificate)
