Introduction

This 5-day P3O® course is designed to give you everything you need to know to pass the P3O® Foundation and Practitioner exams. Training takes place over five days, during which you will also take both exams. The course is fully accredited by BCS , The Chartered Institute for IT.

P3O® Foundation and Practitioner is a valuable certification in the project management industry, showing that the individual is able to establish, develop and maintain a support structure for the delivery of change throughout the organisation, whether through a single office, or a linked office set.

Pre-Course Reading

Before the course begins, we recommend reading the first chapter of the official P3O® manual, which will be provided.

Prerequisites

This course is open to everyone and there are no prerequisites.

Who Should Attend?

This course is recommended for anybody interested or involved in project management, programme management or portfolio management.

Course Structure

• Five days, with a two-part structure
• In the first three days, you will prepare for and take the Foundation exam
• The remaining days will for taking the Practitioner exam
• The course will be delivered over two consecutive weekends Week 1 - Friday, Saturday & Sunday and Week 2 - Saturday & Sunday

P3O® Foundation and Practitioner Exams

Foundation exam:

• Confirms knowledge and understanding of P3O®
• Multiple choice
• 75 questions
• 5 questions are trial and not counted
• 1 hour
• Closed book
• Pass mark is 50%

Practitioner exam:

• Focuses on the ability to design, implement, manage or work in a P3O® office
• Objective testing, a type of multiple choice
• 4 questions, worth 20 marks each
• 150 minutes
• Open book – the P3O® guide is allowed
• Pass mark is 50%

What is P3O®?

P3O (Project, Programme and Project Office) is a framework enabling businesses to set up and maintain a support structure for the delivery of change within their organisation. Provided by the global best practice provider AXELOS, P3O links easily with other AXELOS best practice frameworks such as PRINCE2, MSP and M_o_R because its guidance helps to support and maintain each of the areas these frameworks cover. It helps to align these areas of interest with the business’s objectives, ensuring senior management are able to make informed decisions about how these components of the business can fit in with the overall strategy.

Case Study

BT Design, the design and implementation part of the telecommunications company British Telecom, used P3O in order to support and improve their programme delivery.

In 2008, BT were expanding quickly into new markets, meaning they needed to collect their systems and programmes together and ensure they extracted maximum benefit from them. They did this through a programme called Milestone.

Through Milestone, BT found out that different programmes were being delivered in different ways, and that they needed a consistent approach to programme delivery. They chose P3O, as they felt its proven credentials as a best practice framework meant it would be dependable and consistent.

To implement P3O, BT started with their senior management. By showing them how P3O could be used to help to manage programmes and see what value those programmes were bringing to the business, the Milestone team were quickly able to get the senior management on their side. Once senior management took it seriously, so did everyone else.

The Best Practice guidelines of P3O allowed BT Design to create a Best Practice Team, who worked on the most difficult programmes throughout the business. The team rolled out a universal set of best practice processes across the business, ensuring everything was done consistently and in the most effective way.

Finally, P3O allowed BT Design to balance and manage their portfolio. It gave them a much clearer view of the organisational processes, meaning decision makers had a better idea if programmes were viable or not, and ensured that everybody leading programmes used the best standards of practice.
