Painting and decorating student's start with this level 1 (introduction) course, which is specifically designed for people wishing to enter the painting and decorating industry. It is ideal for those seeking employment in the construction industry or for those who wish to develop their own skills and knowledge for their own satisfaction. This is a qualification which covers a range of constructional technologies. During the course participants will gain knowledge of materials and products relative to the trade and develop a variety of practical skills.

Study Mode & Location:
Adult painting and decorating students study over two days per week:

  • the FCA course is scheduled for Mondays and Tuesday 9.15am - 4.15pm - ENROL TO PC69202
  • the ICA course is scheduled for Thursday and Friday 9.15am - 4.15pm - ENROL TO PC09594

It is important for applicants to consider the ratio of practical work to technology work, both at college and away from class. In essence we try to make the courses as practical as possible but need to consider the underpinning knowledge requirements. For this students attend classroom based â€-technology' sessions each week and are encouraged to complete background reading and work away from class either at home or perhaps using the Adult Student Library Learning Centre.

Course Content:

FCA Course
To be successful on the FCA course (and be eligible to progress to the more advanced ICA) students will demonstrate their practical competence and understanding of related job knowledge by undertaking practical exercises, completing a portfolio of evidence and undertaking an external multi-choice on line test. The portfolio of evidence records satisfactory achievement of standards in the following units:

  • Apply decorative materials
  • Prepare surfaces for decoration
  • Clear and protect the work area
  • Contribute to providing working platforms
  • Contribute to work relationships
  • Handle and store resources

The on line multi choice assessment is undertaken in the spring and consists of a City and Guilds level 1 painting and decorating test.

ICA Course
After completion of the FCA most students choose to progress to this level 2 intermediate award where the introductory skills are extended by the further development of the practical skills and underpinning knowledge.

Of particular note for this level 2 ICA course is the relationship to the â€-employer related NVQ level 2'. Further information on this relationship can be found in the leaflet â€-Adult Students Returning to Study in Construction Occupations'

To be successful on the ICA course (and be eligible to use the portfolio as the bases of an NVQ portfolio) students will complete the said portfolio, undertake a timed practical test, undertake a health and safety test and an external multi-choice on line test. A portfolio of evidence records satisfactory achievement of standards in the following units:

  • Apply basic specialist finishes
  • Apply paint materials by brush and roller
  • Apply standard wallpapers
  • Prepare the work area for operations
  • Prepare surface for decoration
  • Contribute to efficient working practices
  • Erect and dismantle working platforms
  • Store resources ready for use

The on line multi choice assessments are undertaken in the spring and consist of a health and safety test (the same as that undertaken by construction workers applying for a CSCS card) and a City and Guilds level 2 painting and decorating test.

Further details will be given to students regarding this ICA award while undertaking their FCA.
