List of materials
students do not need to buy everything off the list it is just a guide. but they must have oil paint, surfaces to paint on, brushes, turps or white spirit, a palette, protective clothes and a jar for liquid. set of oil paints (a set of basic or primary colours will usually be cheapest, or if you allready have paints bring what you have). a good basic guide is as follows. this list can be built on if you would like, and can be student or artist quality colours or a mix. cadmium red or an orange based red (warm red) alizarin crimson or any deep red (cool red) cadmium yellow (warm yellow) lemon yellow (cool yellow) ultramarine blue (warm blue) prussian blue or cerulean blue (cool blue) white surfaces to paint on can be as follows ready streched and primed canvas (it is cheaper and easier to buy it this way if you are starting out; canvas is the most popular surface) or primed hardboard, mdf board, canvas board or daler board or oil painting paper (this can be bought in pads between a5-a1 sizes, and can be an economical way of making oil sketches and paintings) a set of oil painting brushes in various sizes and shages eg. round, flat and filbert (again if you buy a small pack of brushes you will usually find this a cheaper option. the brushes can be natural hog bristle or synthetic hair made for oil and acrylic painting). small bottle of turpentine or substitute painting medium. odorless medium can be bought such as sansodor or zest it made from citrus. linseed oil palette (this can be a traditional wooden palette with a hole that you can hold whilst painting or you can use something that you already have at hand that you can set on a table e.g. a piece of board, an old china plate, piece of glass etc, most plastics will not be suitable) white spirit or brush cleaner and old rag for cleaning basic drawing materials sketch book palatte knife (optional)
