This 4 session online course will introduce you to the key factors contributing to the deterioration of paper-based artefacts, as well as methods of preservation and conservation.

Paper is a fragile medium, and yet so many valuable items (artwork, books, texts, photographs, contracts, vintage posters, collectibles) are paper-based. If you own or are responsible for artwork or any valuable paper items, or are looking to start a career in conservation and preservation, then this course is relevant for you.

Course programme

This course will be lecture based, with demonstrations and short practical exercises which will allow you to get hands on in your exploration of this subject and the technical examination of paper artefacts. There will be plenty of opportunities for discussion, and a short practical piece of homework each week.

  • Course Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will have gained an insight into the area of paper conservation. You will have begun to understand the ways in which works of art and archival documents on paper can become damaged with time/over exposure to light, humidity and other elements, as well as learning about some techniques for dealing with certain types of damage. You will acquire an awareness of preventive conservation processes and techniques that will help to prevent damage.

Nelson Crespo is a Visual Artist, Educator and Paper Conservator. Nelson’s range of experience comes from having been a Paper Conservator at the TATE between 2004 and 2012. His specialism is collection care of paper-based collections. Nelson’s knowledge covers expertise in areas such as managing the care of collections, conservation of paper-based and photographic collections, art handling and installation – housing, framing and displaying paper based collections.
Professional Experience: Nelson has been working in London, Lisbon, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro as a fabrication and conservation consultant for galleries and visual artists. He has advised galleries on the best practice and museum standards in presenting work and has assisted artists with production/fabrication services. Presently Nelson holds the post of 4D Technical Coordinator at Central Saint Martins and has delivered a range of short courses at Chelsea College of Art.
Over the last 10 years Nelson has been working with established artists such as Susan Hiller, Goshka Macuga, Yayoi Kusama, Gabriel Orozco, Francis Alys, Cildo Meireles, Assum Vivid Astro Focus, Graham Gussin, Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin and many others.
