Course programme

Practical Skills Course

This course is unique in its approach because of the substantial amount of information that will be assimilated and learned in a relatively short period of time. During the course there is interaction and role play using extracts from personal experience and real cases studies as examples.

The course is entirely practical and lasts four consecutive days.

Syllabus

PART ONE: On day one you will learn civil court procedures and the duties, skills and principles required to carry out solicitors' instructions.

On day two: Field Trip. You will experience the labyrinth that is the Royal Courts of Justice and learn how to find your way around this amazing place.

PART TWO: On day three you will learn how to take notes in court during trials or hearings, the duties involved in assisting barristers during criminal trials and how to take statements from witnesses.

PART THREE: On day three you will learn how to analyse a case file and extract relevant information in order to prepare and present an application before a District Judge in chambers.

PART FOUR: On day four you will learn how to attend an immigration interview and ensure that your client's reasons and claims are fully represented and recorded.

PART FIVE: On day four you will learn what to do when a client is arrested and how to protect your client's interests during a police interview. The accreditation requirement and what this means.

Timetable

Monday 10am - 5pm Class Attendance, Tuesday 11am - 4.30 Royal Courts of Justice, Wednesday 10am - 5pm Class Attendance, Thursday 10am - 5pm Class Attendance.

Learning Outcomes

4.It gives you greater skills and options if you are seeking work or a career change and could enhance your chance of promotion.

5.The course covers Conducting District Judge or High Court Master Applications; Representation in the Small Claims Court; Assisting Counsel in Civil and Criminal Trials; Immigration Interviews and Hearings; Police Station Attendances (this is not the Police Station Accreditation Course).

6.Our policy is to encourage our students to find work and not to offer their services free on work placements which does not ultimately guarantee a job.

Assessment

A written assignment of 40 questions to be submitted after doing the four day course.

On passing your assessement you will be issued with your Certificate and a 'Guide to finding work as a freelance Paralegal'.

A one year Affiliate Membership of the National Association of Licensed Paralegals is included in the examination fee.
