Learning and Teaching

This course has been designed as a blended learning course. This means learning is delivered both in person and online.

The distance learning element of this course will allow you to study at a time convenient to you, from the comfort of your own home or workplace, while staying in regular contact with tutors and other students through the virtual learning environment. Typically, modules will start with technology-based activities. For example:

  • Video-lecture captures
  • Online interactive lectures
  • Problem-based scenarios
  • Case-based learning
  • Directed reading
  • Electronic journals and e-books
  • Quizzes

Alongside university attendance for clinical skills, you will be required to undertake a large amount of independent study for the theoretical components of the course. A range of methods will be used to support learning:

  • Lectures
  • Discussion groups
  • Seminars
  • Workshops
  • Skills classes with demonstration and instruction
  • Simulations
  • Role Play

For more details, see our full glossary of learning and teaching terms.

Study time

This blended learning course employs both face-to-face teaching and the use of an online virtual learning environment. As such, you will only typically need to attend UWE Bristol for 20-25 days at each level of study. This equates to approximately four or five days attendance per module, enabling you to study alongside your work.

Assessment

The methods you will be assessed through include essays, posters, presentations, written and electronic examinations and Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs).

During Level one, you will study reflective models and conduct assignments. These will encourage you to reflect on interpersonal skills, clinical decision-making and basic patient assessments.

Unseen examination assessments will test your knowledge and understanding of anatomy and physiology. Your paramedic clinical practice and achievement of learning outcomes will be assessed and recorded in a practice placement portfolio, which you will take on placement.

During level two, assessment of your work will incorporate critical thinking and clinical reasoning through assignments. You will be encouraged to think about your future role as a paramedic mentor through developing teaching packs for level one students. Your advanced clinical interventions will also be assessed through OSCEs.
