Paramedics play an essential role in the delivery of patient care in the complex and dynamic pre-hospital care environment. The role requires the application of potentially lifesaving clinical skills and the administration of drugs to support the physiological status of patients. This will often need to be achieved under emergency conditions and with patients from across the age spectrum who may be suffering from a variety of medical problems and/or traumatic injuries. This award provides the opportunity to develop the existing knowledge and skills of a qualified ambulance technician to that of a practitioner who is eligible to apply for Paramedic registration with the Health and Care Professions Council. It incorporates key areas of biological sciences; health and social policy; behavioural sciences; legal, ethical and professional issues and research and evaluation.
Understanding pre-hospital care and related issues requires an appreciation of the interrelationship of a number of theoretical perspectives including those arising from the disciplines of philosophy, social sciences, humanities and the life sciences. Paramedic practice is also an expanding area of the NHS with new roles and responsibilities constantly being introduced. Whilst a proportion of the Award is devoted to essential underpinning theoretical principles, much of the time spent at university will be focussed upon allowing you to practice the clinical skills you will learn within the safety of dedicated skills labs, Staffordshire University s own fully kitted ambulance, and problem based scenarios which are set within a variety of simulated settings (including a converted and furnished house which is fitted with video and audio facilities for training purposes). Whilst at university you will be taught by experienced paramedics and other pre-hospital educators many of whom have had their work published in educational and paramedic related journals. You will also spend half of your time...

Course programme

The principal teaching and learning methods include, lead lectures, workshops, seminars, student led activities, group work, tutorials, clinical laboratory practice and placement based learning. Problem based learning (PBL) scenarios will feature throughout the Award to encourage integration of subject matter studied on different modules, concepts of team working, and application of knowledge to practice. The teaching and learning is intended to integrate theory and practice, promote an evidence based approach and promote greater learner independence as the award progresses. Support and guidance materials will be accessed via the University's virtual learning environment (VLE). The university based elements will primarily take place at the Stafford campus, although some scenario sessions will take place at Stoke on Trent. Simulated practice of clinical skills will take place in the Faculty of Health Sciences well equipped clinical skills laboratories, and various other specialist facilities/locations are used to promote realistic scenarios. These include; the University s fully kitted ambulance; a community house (which has been furnished and fitted with audio and video facilities); casualty extrication training with Staffordshire Fire Service; and scenario training at the Safeside at Eastside village site. Some teaching sessions may also be undertaken with students preparing for other Health Care professions, affording opportunities for interprofessional education. Please note that during practical sessions you may be requested to take on the role of pre-hospital service users to support your learning. The practice based learning elements are a key feature of the Award and are normally facilitated within West Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust. It is here (whilst under the mentorship of an experienced paramedic) that you will respond to urgent and emergency calls, and apply the theoretical knowledge and the clinical skills that you have learned at university. In addition, within this element there is the opportunity to experience additional potential placements, such as Theatres, and Accident and Emergency. The clinical focus of the practice based element is designed to enable you to meet the competency requirements identified within the Health and Care Professions Council Standards of Proficiency.
