Qualification gained: City and Guilds 9297 Certificate in Learning Support Level 2
Course Content: All learners complete Unit 1, Unit 2 and Unit 5 and then can choose Unit 6 Literacy or Unit 7 Numeracy. Unit 1- Literacy, Language, Numeracy and ICT needs for work, education and life Develop an understanding of the impact on personal, social and working life of poor basic skills and the strategies within Skills for Life to deal with this. Explore the social and cultural concerns which apertain to their local contect Unit 2 - Skills check and signposting Develop knowledge and the tools and processes for identifying literacy, language, numeracy and ICT needs Develop an understanding of the signposting role and local provision Unit 5- Supporting the learner Develop an understanding of the characteristics of adult learners and the learning process. Support Learners under the guidance of a subject specialist teacher Unit 6 - Develop an understanding of Literacy Develop an understanding of the principles of sentence, grammar and whole text cohesion. Increase familiarity with the core curriculum, and explore its purpose and structure. Develop an awareness of the more common learning difficulties and disabilities that may restrict literacy acquisition and development Explore the key influences on language evolution Unit 7 - Develop an understanding of Numeracy Develop a good awareness of the main methods used to develop mathematical understanding. Develop and understanding of the common misconceptions and mathematical errors associated with number related difficulties. Increase familiarity with the core curriculum and explore its purpose and structure Ensure an awareness of the more common learning difficulties and disabilities that may restrict numeracy acquisition and development. Unit 8 - Develop an understanding of ESOL Develop an understanding of the principles of sentence, grammar and whole text cohesion. Increase familiarity with the core curriculum, and explore its purpose and structure. Develop an awareness of the more common learning difficulties and disabilities that may restrict language learning and development. Develop an understanding of the key influences on language change.
Work Experience: 8 hour work placement supporting a learner for literacy, language or numeracy
Course Assessment: Unit 1 - Literacy, Language, Numeracy and ICT needs for work, education and life- is assessed by means of an assignment that is externally set, internally marked and externally verified. Candidates complete this assignment at a date agreed with the course leader. Candidates can refer to their course notes when completing the assignment. Unit 2 - Skills check and signposting - is assessed by an internally set, internally marked assessment. Unit 5 Supporting the Learner is assessed by means of completion of an internally marked Personal Development Journal maintained throughout the duration of Unit 005 and an 8 hour placement. Unit 6 Literacy option, Unit 7 Numeracy option and Unit 8 - ESOL option are assessed by means of 6 internally set and internally marked assignments.
Progression: Level 3 Supporting learning course, teacher training. Work as a volunteer, as a learning support assistant or train to become a basic skills teacher.
Homework: 8 hour placement, approx 4 hours for Unit 1 and 2 and 16 hours homework for Units 5 and 6 or 7.
