Is it right for me?
This intensive practically based course is designed for those who have at least one season's experience working as a multi'activity instructor and who are looking to make the next step in their career as a professional outdoor instructor. You will be employed as an advanced apprentice instructor while training at Kingston Maurward College, with the summer spent in employed work at an outdoor activity centre. You will gain substantial experience in designing, implementing and running outdoor programmes whilst undergoing NGB training and assessments when appropriate.
This programme is normally a progression from the Professional Outdoor Instructor, Professional Watersports Instructor or Level 2 Apprenticeship Programme.

What qualifications will I need?
Substantial experience and competence in a range of outdoor pursuits, one full season of employed work at a multi'activity centre, BCU Level 1 Coach Canoe or Kayak or RYA Assistant Dinghy Instructor plus one other land'based NGB qualification.

What will I be learning about?
The qualification framework consists of:
  • Level 3 NVQ in Outdoor Programmes (Outdoor Education)
  • Level 2 Key Skills in Communication and Application of Number
  • Level 3 Technical Certificate
  • Industry Qualifications (min 2)
  • Additional relevant training

Where will it take me?
Direct entry into the outdoor education/pursuits industry as a professional outdoor instructor who is able to work independently and as part of a team.

What materials are required?
Appropriate outdoor clothing. Technical equipment (if owned)

What is next?
Foundation Degree in Outdoor Adventure Management

How will I be assessed?
Practically and through evidence based portfolio for the NVQ; evidence based portfolio and multi choice test for Key Skills; written workbook for the Technical Certificate; practically and through logbook experience for the NGB Industry Qualifications.
