Course Overview

Qualification gained: Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector

Course Content: The course is made up of 5 sections 1 Understand own role, responsibilities and boundaries of role in relation to teaching - the teacher's role and relevant legislative requirements that influence this role 2 Understand appropriate teaching and learning approaches in the specialist area - identifying and using appropriate teaching and learning approaches 3 Demonstrate session planning skills - what you need to consider when planning and preparing teaching sessions 4 Understand how to deliver inclusive sessions which motivate learners - consider your own practice and develop reflective skills 5 Understand how to use different assessment methods and the need for record keeping - how you can assess learning, what records need to be kept

Work Experience: There is no need to be employed in the lifelong learning sector when beginning this course. Your practical teaching skills can be assessed by 'microteaching' 30 minute sessions to your peers during the course.

Course Assessment: Each section of the qualification is assessed by practical work and answering questions to show understanding of the theory underpinning this work. These combine to form two holistic assignments which must both be passed in their entirety to gain the qualification.

Progression: Upon successful completion of this course you can continue to the Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS) or the Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS). The decision about which course to progress to will depend upon the your teaching role at that time.

Homework: It is expected that you will spend 30 hours of your own time studying to complete this course.

Entry Requirement

There are no formal entry requirements for this course, however, the nature of both the learning and assessment required for the qualification is such that you will need reasonable literacy skills, i.e. the ability to read and interpret written tasks, write answers in a legible and understandable form, and organise written information clearly and coherently. If you achieved the City and Guilds 7302 Certificate in Delivering Learning within the last two years you have covered some of the material on this course however, you will still need to pass the theory and practical assignments for this course in order to gain the qualification. Your microteaching, scheme of work and lessons plans may be used as evidence for some of the practical assignments.
