Course Content

BA Honours Contemporary Textiles at West Wales School of the Arts encourages creativity and innovation in a friendly working environment. Each student has a dedicated workstation in a studio near to its workshop facilities. Students are treated as individuals and are encouraged to develop existing strengths, explore new options and discover personal potential. The course has very favourable retention and attainment rates, reflecting the level of tutorial and technician support provided at the college. The first year of the course begins with an intensive programme of workshops, to provide an introductory and experimental basis for you to explore visual language, media and techniques. Workshops include drawing, design, print, stitch, weave, knit, felt, tufting and digital techniques. These workshops are project-based and offer you the opportunity to develop and creatively apply skills and knowledge whilst developing a personal design process. The second year requires you to develop work within a series of live projects and competitions. Participation in local, regional and national competitions has resulted in a number of student successes. This provides the opportunity to experience a range of specialisms in a variety of situations, to develop technical and professional skills and allows a diagnostic period in preparation for the final year. The third year provides a holistic experience and comprises of a personal negotiated project, developing entrepreneurial skills and theoretical knowledge of chosen subject area. The course culminates in a degree show in the college followed by New Designers - a graduate showcase held in London. This is an opportunity for students to launch their careers to an audience of over 14,000 design professionals.

Course Features

The staff are a creative, enthusiastic and professional team of practitioners, offering a range of different specialisms to enrich the course. Staff range from textile artists, freelance designers, designer-makers and design consultants. The department works closely with the industry and live projects and work experience give students useful contacts and a realistic insight into the world of textiles.

The West Wales School of the Arts is the only college in Wales offering woven textiles as a pathway at degree level. Whilst learning from the rich weaving heritage of Wales, we are training our students to be dynamic, innovative and forward thinking with their woven textile design. The college is also privileged to house the Shared Technology Resource Centre, with its state of the art set up of industry standard software.

The students have the opportunity to specialise in fashion textiles, textiles for interiors, accessory design or fibre art.

Student exchange agreement with Kansas State University in the USA.

Third year graduating students' exhibit at 'New Designers' a graduate showcase/recruitment exhibition held in London.
Career Prospects and Progression

The course will equip students with technical expertise and an understanding of the design process in preparation for their chosen career direction. Graduates find employment in fashion and textiles working in design, merchandising, become self employed as designer/makers or freelance designers, enter teaching, retail or gallery management. Others have progressed to study at MA level at the Royal College of Art in London, The Domus Academy in Milan, Italy and The Rhode Island Institute in the US.

Modules

Year 1: Contextual Studies, Introduction to Textile Print Processes, Computer Design Applications, Visual Studies, Materials, Techniques and Processes, Specialist Development Project. Year 2: Contextual Studies, Professional Studies, Live Project Work and Competitions, Independent Study 2, Art and Design Project 6: Self Directed. Year 3: Dissertation, Enterprise and Visual Research each at 20 Credits and then Art/Design Practice 8: Self Directed (Final Major Project) at 60 Credits. A 40 credit Dissertation module is available for students requiring a greater research element. If this module is chosen, the 20 credit Enterprise module is dropped.

Method of Assessment

Coursework is assessed by module and credits accumulated annually.
