Course Content

The course encourages you to be creative and develop your photographic visual and technical skills based on your interests. It will also introduce you to the diversity of photographic practice and creative techniques (silver-based and digital) used for commercial and personal practice. Throughout the course you will develop a personal strategy for earning a living through photography. The course culminates in a personally negotiated major project, which allows you to pursue your specialist area of interest.

Course Features

Staff - current full time and part time staff are practitioners in a wide range of photographic areas. These include Fine Art, Documentary, Editorial, Fashion and Advertising

Success - students have won awards in most of the major photographic awards. These include Schweppes/National Portrait Gallery - Photographic Portrait Award, Channel 4 Photography Competition, Association of Photographers Student Award, Fujifilm Student Awards, Ilford Student of the Year and ICI - Olmec Student Digital Photographer of the Year. Students have been commissioned by the National Museum of Wales to photograph famous individuals for the national collection

Resources - three photographic studios, professional lighting systems, colour and black and white darkrooms, in house colour processing, suites of Macintosh and PC computers, banner printer, digital cameras, large and medium format cameras. These provide excellent facilities for creative photographic work

Visiting lecturers - a program of lectures from practicing artists, designers and art administrators underpins practical, critical and professional studies

Industry contacts - we have a network of professional photographers, including ex-students that provide up-to-date information about the photography industry

Accommodation - our accommodation and welfare officers can provide a list of vetted accommodation within walking distance of the college at a range of prices

Study support - all students are screened when they enrol and this department has been rated A1 in a government inspection. Photography students with learning difficulties have successfully completed the course with study support

Student exchange agreement with Kansas State University in the USA.
Career Prospects and Progression

Students progress into a number of photographic areas including: Fashion, Advertising, Photojournalism, Documentary, Film Stills, Fine Art and Landscape photography. Students also continue their studies at Post-graduate level.

Modules

Year 1: Contextual Studies, Introduction to Practical Photography, Computer Design Applications, Visual Studies, Documentary and Editorial Photography, Specialist Development Project. Year 2: Contextual Studies, Professional Studies, Live Project Work and Competitions, Independent Study 2, Art/Design Practice Project 6: Self Directed. Year 3: Dissertation, Enterprise and Visual Research each at 20 Credits and then Art/Design Practice 8: Self Directed (Final Major Project) at 60 Credits. A 40 credit Dissertation module is available for students requiring a greater research element. If this module is chosen, the 20 credit Enterprise module is dropped.

Method of Assessment

Coursework is assessed by module and credits accumulated annually.

Entry Requirements

The minimum admission requirement for an undergraduate degree course in Art, Design and Crafts is 160 UCAS points from qualifications including A-Levels, Foundation, National Diploma, GNVQ, Access, Scottish Cert of Ed, Irish Leaving Cert, International or European Baccalaureate. Mature applicants with relevant prior experience are welcome and are considered on an individual basis. Interviews: All applicants are assessed on an individual basis and will be offered the opportunity to attend an interview with a portfolio of their work. Advisory interviews are also available prior to course application.
