ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
This programme is designed for those already holding 240 credits (usually from successful achievement of a Sector-Endorsed Foundation Degeree in Early Childhood Studies.
Applicants will have met the following entry requirements:
3 years full time experience (or part time equivalent) working with children 0-8 and their families, including some experience of working in a group setting.
Applicants will also need to provide evidence of English Language skills as demonstrated by:
A pass in English Language at GCSE, grade C or above; or
A level 2 in Communications Key Skills or equivalent.
Applicants whose qualifications do not conform to the standard entry requirements detailed above may be considered on merit. Relevant experience will be taken into account and full recognition will also be given to the principle of Accreditation of Prior (Experiential) Learning AP(E)L.
PROGRAMME CONTENT/STRUCTURE
What can I expect on the course?
This is an Early Childhood Studies Honours Degree, designed to meet your educational and skills needs as professionals in the sector. On this course you will meet other students with similar interests who work with children aged 0 8 years in a variety of settings. This helps to create a strong identity and a supportive environment.
The teaching and learning strategies used on the course will develop your theoretical knowledge and your skills in reflection on your professional practices, linking learning in the classroom to practical application in the work setting.
How is the course structured?
You will attend one full day and one evening per week, studying seven compulsory modules during the year. The academic year is divided into two 15-week semesters of study, plus an extended summer study period for completion of the Research Project. You will be supported throughout the course by a dedicated team of teaching staff and regular tutorials with your designated Personal Tutor.
How will I be assessed?
The course has a modular structure and is continuously assessed using a variety of methods, which will include individual assignments (for example essays, reports and presentations)and through your own research, evaluation and reflection. The assessment requirements of this course will reflect your specific working contexts and often require you to carry out tasks in your place of work. Throughout the course emphasis is placed on your own personal and professional development.

Your project is an individual piece of research that allows you to carry out a systematic investigation of a topic or your choice arising from personal and professional interest in an area of Early Childhood Studies. The Project should draw together issues of theory and practice and its content may be an extension of modules already taken.
PROGRESSION/CAREERS OPPORTUNITIES
What are the career opportunities?
The course is designed for professionals already in employment. Successful completion leads some students to undertake Initial Teacher Training (Primary), or careers in Further Education, whilst others attain management posts in EYDCPs or other related aspects of local authority provision. Students also progress to further study, for example, to short pathways to achieve EYPS (Early Years Professional Status), or to higher level degree courses (Masters Level)
