Applicants should hold one of the following: Three GCSEs at grade C or above, one of which must be English, ICT, Maths or a Science subject NVQ Level 1 in Hairdressing You should also have an interest / passion for barbering, be of smart appearance and have good interpersonal skills. You will be interviewed to assess your suitability, personal presentation, communication skills, enthusiasm and motivation for the subject area. Students would benefit from previous or current work experience in a hairdressing or barbering environment, although this is not essential.

Barbering Level 2 NVQ
This course leads to a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) at Level 2 and has been designed for those who wish to acquire foundation skills in barbering. The course aims to provide students with an insight into the barbering industry by offering them the opportunity to gain foundation skills and knowledge in this vocational area. Students successfully completing this qualification will be equipped with the skill to complete a range of barbering services and gain employment as a barber. Services covered include shampooing and conditioning, cutting and drying, reception and consultation. Students will also be taught to have an appreciation of the health and safety aspects applicable to a safe salon environment. The knowledge gained, and skills acquired, will prepare students for the Level 3 Diploma in Barbering, NVQ Level 2 in Hairdressing and NVQ Level 3 in Hairdressing (although students will be required to apply and be re-interviewed for these courses if they wish to progress).

Course Content:
Students must complete a minimum of nine units (the six mandatory units and three optional units) to achieve the full qualification.

Mandatory Units:

  • Unit G1 Ensure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety
  • Unit G5 Give clients a positive impression of yourself and your organisation
  • Unit G7 Advise and consult with clients
  • Unit H9 Shampoo and condition hair and scalp
  • Unit H7 Cut mens hair using basic techniques
  • Unit H8 Cut facial hair to shape


  • Optional Units:

    • Unit H14 Dry mens hair
    • Unit H13 Change hair colour using basic techniques
    • Unit H12 Perm and neutralise hair using basic techniques or
    • Unit H15 Perm, relax and neutralise hair
    • Unit H11 Style hair using basic plaiting techniques and added hair
    • Unit G4 Fulfil salon reception duties
    • Unit G6 Promote additional products or services to clients
    • Unit G8 Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work
    • Unit H18 Provide scalp massage services

    Please note that the College may limit availability of optional units.

    Work Experience / Practical Experience:
    Not compulsory, but firmly advised to gain valuable experience in this ever changing industry. Please note however, there may be instances where places on the course will be offered with the proviso that students have a work placement. These will be instances where it is thought, for a variety or reasons, that the candidate will need this experience run along side their course in order to benefit from full achievement of the qualification. Reasons will always be explained to the candidate on interview.

    Entry Requirements:
    Applicants should hold one of the following:

      Accreditation of Prior Learning / Experience:
      This will be used if appropriate and discussed at interview and induction.

      Entry Process:
      All applicants will be invited to an interview with the tutor. Interviews normally take place between January and September of the year in which the course starts.

      Assessment:
      Students will be assessed by a combination of the following methods:
    • Observation
    • Written questions and assignments
    • Simulation
    • Case studies


    • Progression Routes:
      Alternatively, successful students may progress, subject to interview, to the Level 3 Diploma in Barbering (City & Guilds 6902) or the Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing (City & Guilds 6902) full-time courses.

      Career Options:
      Upon successful completion of this qualification you may seek employment as an apprentice in a salon and undertake the NVQ Level 3 in Barbering (City & Guilds 3014) on a part-time basis.
