Course Description
The BTEC Higher National Certificate in Construction is a professional qualification for students who are usually in full employment and who already hold either a BTEC National Qualiication or an NVQ trade qualification with three to five years experience in the industry.(see below for further details)

Course Structure
The HNC in Construction is comprised of six core units:
  • Analytical Methods
  • Construction Science and Materials
  • Design Principles and Application
  • Group Project
  • Health Safety & Welfare
  • Management Principles and Application


Students must select four specialist units from one of the following disciplines:
  • Law and Contract
  • Measurement A
  • Project Management
  • Refurbishment and Adaptation
  • Site Surveying Procedures
  • Technology A
  • Technology B
  • Technology C
  • Tendering and Estimating


Course Entry Requirements
All learners will need to complete a part-time Higher Education application form and interview prior to enrolling.

BTEC Higher National Programmes are intended primarily for people who are in, or plan to enter employment and who have reached the minimum age of 18. Students who enter with at least one of the following qualifications are likely to benefit more readily from the programme:
  • Edexcel Advanced VCE (e.g. in Construction and the Built Environment)
  • BTEC National Certificate or Diploma in building/construction or a related discipline
  • At least 1 A Level pass, with appropriate supporting passes at GCSE grades A, B or C in an appropriate science or technology subject
  • NVQ 3 Construction Site Supervision
  • BTEC National Award and Trade NVQ 3


Mature entrants (over 21) with previous construction experience may be recognised through the Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL).

Course Progression
It is possible to progress onto the HND in Construction. You may further your studies by progressing to professional institute examinations (CIOB, RICS) or enrolling on a degree level course.

Course Career Prospects
  • To gain promotion into higher management of individual companies within the Construction Sector into positions such as Building Project Manager, Building Services Engineer and Building Control Surveyor.
