Course programme

Summary: The course is for those working or hoping to work as a technician within the civil engineering industry.

Course description: This course is suitable for school leavers who have gained suitable employment, for those working in an administration, or for those working on a construction site wanting to develop a career in the technical/professional side of the construction industry, such as civil engineer, civil engineering technician, construction/project management or surveying.
Attendance on the course is one day a week which during the first year is on a Thursday and the second year on a Tuesday.
Units include:
Health, safety and welfare in construction and the built environment
The unit considers the legal framework relating to employer and employee responsibilities, including the roles, responsibilities and procedures required following accidents.
Sustainable construction
The unit considers the ways in which  the construction sector impacts upon the natural environment.
Mathematics in construction and the built environment
The unit explores the rules for manipulation of formulae and equations, calculation of lengths, areas and volumes, determination of trigonometric and geometric properties and graphical and statistical techniques.
Science and materials in construction and the built environment
Students will investigate some typical materials including the identification of the most important materials, an understanding of how these are extracted, harvested or manufactured, their key properties  and the mechanisms and techniques used to prevent deterioration.
Construction technology and design in construction and civil engineering
This unit will enable students to cope with the requirements of construction related projects as they pass through various stages from design to construction including the implications of changes and variations in the design.
Construction in civil engineering
Infrastructure projects such as new roads, railways, airports and water projects all require the skills of the civil engineer. This unit considers the role of those responsible for these projects, and how they are developed and achieved.
Graphical detailing in construction and the built environment
Students will come to appreciate the layout of drawings, the choice of scale and proportion, the types of views used, the use of correct line widths, conventional graphic symbols and the appropriate use of annotation.
Surveying in construction and civil engineering
Students will become familiar with basic surveying techniques, be able to carry out simple surveying tasks and to present the data.
Setting out processes in construction and civil engineering
Students will work with traditional methods to achieve an understanding of the essential mathematical and practical skills required for the setting out process.
Structural mechanics in construction and civil engineering
Students will come to understand the forces which are created in the building framework and the structural elements, and be able to safely design simple structural units.
Computer–aided drafting and design for construction
Students will learn how CADD is used to produce drawings, including the software, hardware and skills in using CADD software to produce 2D drawings and 3D models.
Further mathematics in construction and the built environment
This unit considers aspects of ‘pure’ mathematics including statistical data, properties for beams and columns, complex linear/angular/area and volume measurements, trigonometrical identities, rates of change and decay, numerical integration, complex areas or volumes by definite integration and indefinite integration.

Entry requirements: Applicants should have four GCSEs at Grades A* - C, or BTEC First Certificate/Level 2 Diploma, or Higher Diploma in CBE.
Mature applicants who have suitable experience in the construction industry may also gain entry to the course, subject to interview.

Assessment: Assessment is through course assignments.

Academic progression: Successful students could move on to and HNC/HND in Civil Engineering (part time) or BEng/MEng in Civil Engineering (full time), subject to achieving an overall grade of MM.

Career progression: The course will equip you with the skills and knowledge needed for a variety of interesting and rewarding careers in construction.
