Who is the programme for? The Higher National qualification in Business is designed to equip students with the knowledge, understanding and skills required for employment success and/or further study within the business discipline. The promotion of personal effectiveness, through practical application and the development of transferable skills, enables students to meet changing circumstances, whether these arise from a shift in their own sphere of employment, promotion to supervisory or managerial positions, or from general changes in business practices.
What will I study? Students are required to complete 10 units, comprising of five mandatory units and five optional units. Mandatory units include Marketing, Managing Financial Resources and Decisions, Organisations and Behaviour, Business Environment, Research Project (undertaken in year two). In the second year of study students are provided with a choice of optional units that they want to study. Where possible choices will be catered for, subject to demand and staff availability. To satisfy the number of optional units required, students can also select a sample of optional units, which include: Human Resource Management, Business Law, Management Accounting, Advertising and Promotion; Small Business Enterprise; European Business. Please note the ability to offer units is dependent on demand but every effort will be made to provide a variety of options.

How is it assessed? The performance of each student will be assessed continuously within each unit, through completion of a number of assignments.
Future prospects? The programme is a nationally recognised qualification designed with career progression and professional recognition in mind. Consequently many professional bodies recognise the Higher Nationals in Business as providing exemptions to varying levels of their awards. Students may also wish to progress on to a Degree programme in a business, or a related discipline.
When will the programme start? You can join this evening programme in September 2010. There will also be an opportunity to join this programme in November 2010.
How long will it take? The evening programme is structured on a modular basis, with each unit being taught over a period of nine weeks. It is usual for a student to complete the full award (10 units) within 2 years, although there is no time limit. BTEC registration covers a period of 5 years. There will also be a day release class running (subject to demand), where you will attend for a full day once a week. This will also be structured on a modular basis.
