This will provide an award for candidates who work or wish to work with children and young people in a school setting. There are two units in the year long course - Unit 1 - Teaching and Learning in Schools and Unit 2 - Effective Communication within a Safe Environment. Each unit has 60 hours taught time, with 60 hours spent in placement within a school.

About this course

All teaching assistant course candidates must arrange their own placements and successfully complete an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau check.

Course Description:

This qualification will enable the learner to develop the knowledge and skills needed when supporting teaching and learning in school environments. It is suitable for learners who are working in roles that support pupils learning including teaching assistants, learning support assistants and special needs assistants.

Content

Child and Young Person Development

This unit aims to develop knowledge and understanding of child and young person development and the factors, including transitions which may affect development. Unit credit value - 2.

Safeguarding the Welfare of Children and Young People

This unit provides the knowledge and understanding required for safeguarding the welfare of children and young people. Unit credit value - 3.

Communication and Professional Relationships with children, young people and adults

This unit provides the knowledge and understanding that underpins effective communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults. Unit credit value - 2.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Work with Children and Young People

This unit provides the knowledge and understanding of policies and practices to promote equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people. Unit credit value - 2.

Help Improve Own and Team Practice in Schools

This unit provides the knowledge, understanding and skills required to help improve own and team practice in schools. It requires demonstration of competence in reflecting on and improving own practice, and supporting the work of the team. Unit credit value - 3.

Maintain and Support Relationships with Children and Young People

This unit covers the competence required to maintain and support relationships with children and young people. It requires demonstration of competence in communicating with children and young people, developing and maintaining relationships with children and young people, and supporting relationships between children and young people and others in the work setting. Unit credit value - 3.


Support Children and Young Peoples Health and Safety

This unit provides the knowledge, understanding and skills required to support the health and safety of children and young people. It requires demonstration of competence in recognising and dealing with risks in the work setting, supporting children and young people to assess and manage risk for themselves and responding to emergency situations. Unit credit value - 3.

Support Children and Young Peoples Positive Behaviour

This unit provides the knowledge, understanding and skills required to support children and young people’s positive behaviour. It requires demonstration of competence in supporting positive behaviour and responding to inappropriate behaviour. Unit credit value - 2.

Support Learning Activities

This unit provides the knowledge, understanding and skills to support learning activities. It requires competence in supporting the planning, delivery, assessment and review cycle. Unit credit value - 2.

Level: 2 Course Type: Part Time Entry RequirementsEntry Requirements:

There are no formal entry requirements. However, candidates must have good verbal communication skills, have the potential and opportunity to gain evidence for the qualification in the work place and be supporting pupils in the foundation stage or KS1-4 for a minimum of 12 hours a week. Ideally candidates will have a minimum of least one term of experience within a school environment prior to beginning the course.

Progression & AssessmentAssessment and Progression:

The units cover children and young peoples development, the requirements of safeguarding and the importance of equality, diversity, and inclusion.

They also include:

  • Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults.
  • Schools as organisations, including types of schools, policies and procedures and the wider environment in which they operate.
  • Supporting children and young people with disabilities, special educational needs or where English is an additional language.
  • Preparing and maintaining learning environments and invigilating examinations.
  • Supporting learning activities and extracurricular activities including planning and delivery.
  • Supporting children and young people at meal times, during play and leisure and when they are travelling outside school.
  • Improving personal and team practice.

Learners can choose optional units at level 3 to support progression. Total credits needed is 30. This will include 24 credits from mandatory units and 6 credits taken from optional units, 3 credits from optional group A and 3 credits from optional group B, which will be determined by your role and responsibilities.

The candidate is expected to build a portfolio of evidence which demonstrates performance, knowledge and understanding of their job role. A variety of assessment methods are used which can include direct observation, questioning, examination of work products, witness statements, accreditation of prior learning and experience, reflective accounts and simulation or professional discussion.

Duration & LocationDuration:

The duration of the qualification will vary depending on the individual but employees should aim to complete the certificate within 6-9months.

If your business is to reap the benefits of training, it is essential that employees are released from work duties to meet with their Assessor/attend training. On average, candidates will need to meet with their Assessor once every 4 weeks for 2-3 hours per visit. In addition, candidates will need to work on their portfolios for approximately 1 hour per week.
