Category 2 Gas Training Certificate

Course Details

This course is for learners who are over 19 years old, employed or seeking employment in the gas industry and who are not eligible for an apprenticeship scheme with a managing agent. The aim of the course is to provide knowledge and skill in gas installation and maintenance so that you can successfully obtain a gas training certificate issued by Gas Logic. You will need to have employment with a registered gas company to be able to progress onto assessment under the national Accredited Certification Scheme (ACS) rules. Employment and evidence collection is solely the learner's responsibility. You will need to provide protective work clothes, footwear and basic study materials, all other equipment and study notes are supplied by the College. Text books are available on loan in the College library. The learner will study, practice and be assessed so that they can be awarded the training certificate. Subject to satisfactory portfolio evidence you may access ACS assessment for the purpose of registration as a competent person. At College you will study the basic theory and practical skills in domestic gas pipe work installations of space heaters (fires), cookers, water heaters and central heating boilers (excluding central heating systems). In practical lessons you will be measuring, bending and jointing copper tube to dimension. Install simple pipe work to connect fires and cookers. Carry out routine maintenance and commissioning of various gas appliances. Maintain safe working practices of all practical tasks within the workshop. On site evidence is required to develop a portfolio in the areas to be assessed for ACS accreditation prior to registration. Depending on which assessment areas are selected i.e. space heaters (fires), cookers, water heaters and central heating boilers a recognised time frame for completion of the portfolio evidence is specified. There are practical assessments, assessed by approved College staff, and written assignments/tests carried out under exam conditions. Learners must pass all assessments and tests to obtain the training certificate. Employers and learners must be aware that the on-site portfolio evidence is an integral part of this course. The learner is required to build a portfolio of workplace evidence before an application for the NVQ award can be made. The ACS gas assessments will follow the normal successful completion of the training certificate, submission of satisfactory portfolio evidence and a pre assessment test. Additional costs for ACS assessments will vary subject to the assessment required but will include the certification cost. Assessments include CCN1 (Core gas safety) and a selection of HTR1 (Space heaters), CKR1 (Cookers), WAT1 (Water heaters) and CEN1 (Central heating boilers).
