Who is the course for?
This is a national award which was introduced in 2002. This award is recognised by the QCA and appears on the framework of accredited qualifications for Teaching Assistants. It is a part time course for experienced teaching assistants and/or those who have a range of responsibilities within the school. This award provides the underpinning knowledge for the NVQ for Teaching Assistants Level 3.
You may be:
• Already working with children in a different setting and want to move into a school setting.
• A mature person already working in a school, assisting teaching staff, on a paid or voluntary basis and who does not have a relevant qualification.
• Already working as a teaching assistant but you want to update your knowledge and skills and gain a recognised qualification.
How long would it take me to study for the STL2?
This course is offered on a part-time basis.
• Evening sessions lasting three hours
• Duration of 25 weeks
• Term time only
What will I study on the course?
The course consists of 2 units:
• Unit 1: The role of the teaching assistant in the school
• Unit 2: Supporting pupils with particular learning needs

It gives you the opportunity to meet and share with others working in a school environment and compare and discuss current practice. On completion of Unit 1 you will have gained an understanding about:
• Building positive relationships with pupils
• Contributing to the learning process in a variety of ways including observing and assessing children†s progress, providing support during learning and contributing to record keeping.
• Your role within the team
• The importance of monitoring learning, implementing changes and developing own practice.
• How to manage the risks involved in managing behaviour.
On completion of Unit 2 you will have gained an understanding about:
• Identifying the needs of individual children who have specific learning needs.
• The importance of managing children†s behaviour to keep them safe.
• The effects of legislation on the schools policies and procedure for keeping children safe.
• The techniques and use of reflective analysis
