Course content:
A short â€-taster' course giving you some initial skills and knowledge as a basis for subsequent easy, rapid acquisition of Mandarin Chinese, whether by attending further classes, home study or contacts with native speakers. Uses East Peasy Chinese (book + CD), ISBN 978-1-40531-863-1.
By the end of this course you will be able to
-identify by ear and reproduce the tones which often distinguish one Mandarin spoken word from another
-recognize and produce any Mandarin syllable and say whatever you can say with near-native pronunciation
-use numbers for counting, simple arithmetic, prices, dates and times of day
-understand and produce some simple single-clause statements and related questions
-analyse Chinese characters (â€-kanji') into strokes and component parts, copy them legibly and find them in dictionaries using Chinese dictionary order.
Course Structure:
Expected class size is about 8 to 13. There is homework to do outside the class, using sound recordings (a CD comes with the textbook) and practising Chinese script. There are some interactive tasks, dictations, substitution drills and some group work. Accurate pronunciation, legible Chinese handwriting. aural discrimination and comprehension are priorities.

You will have access to the Learning Centre in Wandsworth and Tooting. This includes the use of computers, audio-visual equipment and at Wandsworth, our language laboratory

Students in receipt of an income-based benefit pay £20 per course per term.
