No previous knowledge of personnel practice is required to join this course. However, all students will need to be interviewed prior to commencement of the course.
Suitable For
This course is suitable for a number of different types of student. Firstly, it will assist individuals already working in personnel who wish to start on the first rung of the professional ladder. Secondly, it will greatly assist those who have recently taken on personnel duties (say in a small or medium sized business) but have no formal training in personnel. Thirdly, it is appropriate for managers and supervisors who have a need to enhance their people management skills and to be aware of legal and procedural developments.
Course Content
The course covers the following 4 units:
Human Resource Plans & Organisations
An overview of the personnel function, the contribution of HR plans to the organisation, contracts of employment and the utilisation of personnel records and data.
Recruitment and Selection
Understanding the recruitment and selection process and taking part in practical exercises.
Training & Development
The theory of learning and design, delivery and evaluation of a training event.
Performance Management & Employee Relations
Understanding and taking part in the appraisal, grievance and discipline processes and reviewing motivation, reward and working relationships.
Method of Assessment
Students are assessed through assignments and will be required to collect a portfolio of work including a "Learning Log". There are four assignments, two written and two practical plus a work-based project.
Please note that, in addition to the Thursday evening class, you will need to attend on a number of Saturdays (dates to be advised) - potential students will need to add these dates to their diaries as attendance is required at these sessions.
Progression
On successful completion of the course, students will be eligible to become Associate Members of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (AssocCIPD). The course also gives individuals access to the first rung of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Developments' professional qualifications.
